The Demise of Star Wars(and Star trek)

I think LotR has a long life ahead of it because of all that is out there...not just the 3+hobbit...silmarillion and others. I heard somewhere 1 book for each of other 19 rings. There are whole languages out there.

Star Wars will lose many fans after ep3 but not all...we still have EU.

I think people will continue to love and watch the OT of Star Wars. They are classics. I think that in the prequels, LucasFilm has focused more on pushing special effects and the wow factor then the actual story line or character development. The OT had effects and a good story, something that makes for mass appeal. I don't see this trend of little plot changing with episode III. I am only hoping that on films like the 4th Indiana Jones that is coming out, Lucas will focus more on the roughing riding, tough adventure seeker that Indiana Jones is instead of try to impress people with effects.

It will continue in the EU, and those non-EU people will have to submit and need to catch up!

I will never "submit" to the EU  I'll continue to watch the movies, talk with people who like the movies, write my own fan fictions, draw fan art and look others' fan art and read others' fan fiction. I do read some of the comics every now and then, but I do not regard any of it as canon. But there's plenty for a fan to do without resorting to reading the trash that makes up the majority of EU material.

Furthermore, the Prequels will survive along with the OT because, face it, you don't buy a book and then just read the second half. Remember, also, that there were people, when Empire Strikes Back first came out, who loved A New Hope and hated this sequel. The same can be said for people who loved the first two movies, but hated Return of the Jedi. There will always be people who loved the original and hate everything that comes after. But the Prequels add to the Original Trilogy, add depth to the characters (especially Vader, Obi-Wan and the Emperor), and I am confident that future generations will not separate them as the majority of this generation has.
