The future of SW Games

There are enough threads on the future of SW overall.

Enough raw emotion and surging feelings.

But what of the games. They have been the closest we can get to being jedi, pilots, commanders and bounty hunters.

What of them?

I wish to take JKII as an example.

I recently downloaded and played the fan sp mission Main Frame and Dark Alliance, both by the same group.

It was better than any mods or MP gaming going. I prefer the SP side of JKII. I am sure that I am not alone.

But what I wish to ask is this...

Should Lucas Arts bother releasing new improved engines for each release, or follow the example of Sierra and Valve, and do as they did for Half Life.

The SP engines I flawless as far as I can tell, so why not leave it be and have the group focus on what makes the games so great - storylines. There are enough budding young modders and conceptualists and writers (me amongst them) that have storylines that are entirely plausable, little gamplay ideas or tweaks worth imcorporaing.

Focus on mission packs, like MOTS, but with greater scope.

Some could be Jedi, some Sith, some Trooper, some Bounty Hunter.

Same for the other games - do a single revamped X-Wing engines, and have it entirely SP modable, then do new missions and ships as good ideas come up.

There is enough EU material out there, from the Great Sith war with Quel Droma through to the Yuzhan Vong invasion.

Why not exploit it. Even on a purely mercenay level (Should appeal to them more than anything) you have lots of potential moeny making ideas. Add-ons sel, more so these days than ever - hav you SEEN the sheer volume of them for The Sims?

What better way is there... If movies die, then this keeps the continum alive in a good way.

What they said. And I really doubt we've seen the last of Kyle. Shadow Academy will prove for some great gaming. Fight some Dark Jedi while finding Kyle's child who is slowly being turned. As a finale, Kyle must destroy his child who has fallen to deep into the Darkside. A dark twist in the DF series is what is needed.

KotOR will rule!

You raise several good pounts. But somehow, the decision will come down to economics. Will recycling an older engine make more money than developing a whole new one? Probably. But I think that not developing new engines and pushing the boundaries makes you lose your edge, so to speak. Maybe not a year from now, but five or six years from now, while other companies stayed sharp and developed new ways of playing video games, you would be scrambling to compete, and that makes you lose money. So in the long run, you need to keep developing new engines.
