yangyan
Please can someone tell me what hint brushes in mapping do?
Eldritch
Hint brushes are only used if you're having problems with VIS... for full details, I suggest taking a look at some of the tutorials on hint brushes, as what they actually do is difficult to explain. Try looking for some tutorials here.
lassev
In this case "problems with VIS" would mean intolerable low FPS... Alas, hint brushes are easy to make, but hard to use (harder to understand even in theory). None of this means you shouldn't use them, though. Suicide20
Hints break up the PVS tree within the BSP. Nothing more, nothing less. Unless you have a one room map you should use hints. Does this remove the need for VIS blocking and proper world design? No not at all...
Leslie Judge
http://www.nibsworld.com/rtcw/tutorial_detail_and_hint_brushes_part1.shtml The second part is about hint brushes. Reading the full article is recommended.
yangyan
Can't you just make more brushes to inrease the framerate?
lassev
Hint brushes are typically usable, when you have to rooms, corridors or corresponding stuctures connected, but have no doors between them. With doors you use, of course, area portals. But with an open corridor, you must have more sophisticated methods.
