Materia was a GREAT system.

 

The system of leveling up the Materia made sure that you got to see new stuff at regular intervals, and that you didnt get the next version of Bolt or Fire too early (making life too easy. You still had to earn those AP) or too late (leaving you up poo creek without a Highwind!)

 

Also allowed for strategy on a passive individual basis aswell as the active in game basis.

 

Setting up Counter Magic and Bahamut. Elemental. All. Then in battle use of Reflect and Magic or two people working to Barrier and MBarrier the group.

 

And finding new magic was less weird.

 

Buying stones imbued with ancient power, or finding them was better than drawinf it from enemies or strange springs from the ground.

 

Atleast the materia's origin was actually known / explained / part of the story. Magic in the other FFs was just there (except the Aeons / Summons / Guardian Forces of course), so was a nice touch.
