The Matrix Reloaded [Contains spoilers]

Neo took a big risk by choosing the left door yes but he thought it better to do that then to let the human race continue to be batteries for the machines forever. Kind of a leap of faith, he wanted to be different than his predecessors and try to win the war and not give up. It was also a kind of defiance in the face of the arrogant Archicect. The fact that he saved Trinity when the Archicect said it was impossible shows that the machines can be wrong and there is still hope to win the war.

Ok this is a speculation/theory my friend told me about (he got it from a forum):

There is a Matrix world and a real world, like in the first movie. The machines build Zion to flush out all the "bugs" in the Matrix software system(ie. round up all the humans that are not completely compatible or accepting of the Matrix) and put the "buggy" people all in Zion. This way, once all "bugs" in the Matrix software have been removed, the machines can just go to Zion and kill everyone. Also, once they do this, they "restart" the Matrix. After everyone is killed in Zion by the machines, new people are supposedly selected by THE ONE to rebuild Zion and gather a new group of "buggy" people that might cause trouble for the Matrix. Thus, Zion has been "destroyed" 5 times, meaning the Matrix has reset 5 times and all the "buggy" people in Zion have been killed 5 times. However, this time, with Neo, something is wrong. For the machines to enter and kill everyone in Zion, all they previously had to do was enter the access codes into Zion. This time, the codes have changed, thus in the first Matrix Agent Smith was trying to get the new codes from Morpheus, and in Reloaded, the machines began to dig into Zion instead of trying to get the new code. The reason Neo was able to send a EMP blast at the Sentinels was because he was part machine and part human. There is something in him that allows him to gain certain properties and traits of a machine, along with his natural human characteristics. Thus, he was able to disable the Sentinels.

Keep in mind, this theory is different from the "Matrix with-in a Matrix" theory. I know this is confusing, but the Matrix is a confusing topic, so if anyone has any questions, please ask. :D

  • 2 weeks later...

I want to know about the Marovingian... okay, he's an ancient program, uses ghosts, vampires and werewolves to do his dirty work. For all of his talk of reaction, he's shocked as hell when he finds out that Neo has gotten the Keymaker and also rather upset.

All of the programs we've met have had some definate sense of purpose. Smith and the Agents, the Keymaker and even the Oracle. But the Marovingian doesn't appear to know his place, he's screwing around with the Matrix by holding the Keymaster exactly when the Machines most need him to get into contact with Neo and the Zionites.

So what's with the Marovingian? It struck me while I was watching the movie that he might be one of the Ones who decided to trade Zion for the good life in the Matrix (like what's-his-face did in the first movie). Persephone said that the Marovingian was a lot like Neo when she first met him, afterall.

Thoughts?

Very interesting theory. It seems possible. I agree the guy seems to have no purpose other than to act like an arrogant bastard and piss people off. The whole orgasmic chocolate cake thing was so pointless. I think the reason why he wants to hold on to the Key Maker is because Neo needs him to get to the Source and if Neo gets to the Source then he can destroy the Matrix and without the Matrix the Marovingian has no purpose and there for cannot exist. Or something like that. ;)

But the Intuitive Program known as the Oracle has existed since the failure of Matrix 1.0, so she's been through five Ones reaching the Source. And the Oracle tells Neo that the Marovingian is one of the oldest "of us." So wouldn't that imply that the Marovingian has been through a few Ones, himself? And if he had, then he'd know that the Source is just a Matrix fail-safe, a trap for the One.

All of the Progams do what they're "intended to do"... it's bashed into our heads all throughout the movie. They don't change, they're just there, each with their purpose and their role in the Matrix' fail-safe system. But the Marovingian seems like a loose-cannon, which seems really contradictory to the whole purpose thing... only humans and the exiled programs act like that.

Whether he's a human or a program that escaped deletion, I think he's obviously trying to help the One in the only way he knows how.

He can't just tell Neo and Morpheus that they're being played by the Oracle... that's a lesson they won't learn until it's too late, no matter how much they hear it before. They made a leap of faith with the Oracle, so they'll stick with it and just figure anyone who says the Oracle is doing anything other than trying to help them is on the other side. None of what happened at the end of the movie would have happened if Persephone hadn't sold the Marovingian out.

Definately don't think he's playing on the team of the Matrix, no matter what he is.

But all of the Ones before had picked the right door meaning the Matrix would continue and be rebooted so to speak. When a computer reboots it does not terminate any programs so the Marovingian will always exist as long as the One chooses the right door, or if the One fails to get the Key Maker there is no risk that he'll ever choose the left door. Theres no evidence that the Marovingian is a good guy.
