el_peachy
My exposure to rpgs in the past have essentially been Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts. I played Balder's Gate II on the PC, but found it quite... tedious I suppose. Anyway, I just wanted to know if Knights of the Old Republic will be anything like those Square games? From all the previews and product descriptions I've read, it kinda seems like the story will be a bit too open... that your character can be almost anything you want it to be, almost a bit anonymous, so it kind of makes it hard to interact personally with the world and its characters. I'm probably wrong, I'm still extremely excited about the game, but could anyone explain how it will all work? Will there be a detailed complex story to follow, one like Tidus'? And do u think the combat will be smooth? Thanks guys javascript:smilie('') smile
Burrie
Welcome el_peachy, Well, I believe we can tell you one thing almost for certain... you WON'T be an anonymous person. In fact, you will most probably become the biggest hero of the Star Wars Galaxy in this era, just like Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy... how cool is that? You might've been confused with Star Wars Galaxies, a MMORPG which will be released shortly... in that game, you will be pretty much anonymous and be just "another Star Wars character". As for combat... I've never been too good at describing things so my fellow posters might/will probably do a better job than I can. In any case, the fights does resemble Final Fantasy a bit. You'll have three characters in your party most of the time(with the ability to switch characters on your personal ship, the Ebon Hawk)... whenever hostilities begin, you'll have the option to attack the foes. Now, combat won't look as well-ordered as it does in the Final Fantasy game, with everyone neatly lined up in a row and everyone attacking on their turn. Also, there won't be a transition to a combat screen, all fights take place in the area where you initiated the fight. When a fight starts, you'll simply give your characters orders on who to attack, how to attack, and various other options... the game will then execute their actions in realtime(much like a RTS game, actually). The rolls on wether your character will hit or not will take place every round, with each round being about 6 seconds long. If you want an example on what the combat looks like, I recommend the second video of the KotOR E3 footage. If you can handle the download, you might want to look into the Neverwinter Nights demo. That game will give you an idea of what KotOR will look like when it comes to character creation and combat. Note, however, that combat will still look somewhat different in KotOR, seeing as how we'll be capable of controlling the NPCs ourselves... plus NWN is in a totally different world than KotOR. In any case, if you have any more questions and need anything clarified on my description, feel free to ask away.
Jedi Apprentice
IGN's Article on KoTOR's Combat I don't think I can explain much better than that. To add to what Burrie recommended, you might want to check out the 21 minute video which you can find here on the boards, but watch out, it's full of spoilers. You can also take a look at the The Official Site's boards to hear what all the devs have to say. It's going to be a great game. Hand's down. We hope you'll like it to. I know we sure are liking it. Taos
I'm going to let you in on a little secret.......I've never really played many RPG's either. I've always just played the FPS, sports, and adventure games. I don't know if you can call Zelda and rpg but that's really about as close to one as I have come in the last several years. There is just something about this game that caught my eye almost a year ago when I first heard about it and started reading about it. The story alone makes the game worth getting IMHO. Then you add all the other elements - character customization, graphics, and the attention to detail that Bioware has given the game......it's no wonder why I've been wanting this game for such a long time. Nightlord
Likewise. The only RPG I've ever played was NWN. My brother was a bit of Diablo II fanatic for a while but to be honest it didnt do anything for me However I've always been a Star Wars fan and when I found out about the game it was an overnight obsession.
