SCO Vs. The World

So what do you guys think about this SCO deal? They threaten IBM, they threaten Apple, and they threaten Linux.

 

For those of you who don't know the story:

 

SCO owns the rights to the UNIX IP (intellectual property). They bought it off AT&T years ago. Now they're going after IBM, Apple, and even Linux because all of that supposedly contains traces of UNIX code.

 

The latest bit of news is that they have an "introductory" rate for Linux users to buy their liscences to use the UNIX IP. They want 700 dollars for a one CPU machine. After some date (can't remember which, it's in the near future however) they will raise the prices further.

 

They refuse to say what lines of code are in Linux that belong to the UNIX IP. There has been much theroy as to why this is. Most believe it's because as soon as we find out what exactly are the offending lines, Linux authors/manufacturers will go in, change it, recompile and redistrubte UNIX-free Linux.

 

Not only that, but they have been making these claims (eg, suing IBM, demanding licensing fees from Linux users) seemingly when their stocks start to dip. Some people believe this is a dirty scam by the CEOs.

 

Who really knows what exactly their intent is. But whatever it is, I don't like it. I havn't seen one person who has liked it. I want to know what the hell the SCO is thinking. I have a strong feeling that some people are going to end up arrested by the end of this.

 

One last thing to note: Microsoft is backing the SCO. Right. Obviously a maneuver to try and knock their only two real threats to their monopoly off the market. I can almost picture a bunch of MSFT executives sitting around the table when they heard the news.

 

Exec 1: What? The SCO is going after Linux?

Exec 2: What dreadfully evil! How dare they!

Exec 1: Indeed! We trademarked corporate extortion years ago!

Exec 2: Well, I guess we might as well back them up. If we didn't inspire evil, maybe afterwards we can jump in and try to take the credit for it afterwards.

Bill Gates: Well, what are you waiting for? Go my pretties! Get those men and their little penguin too! *cackle*

Exec 1 & 2: Yes, my Fuhrer!

Save the Penguin! I think Apple had a deal with the people who made UNIX to use some unix code. Same with Linux and IBM or else this thing would've happened earlier.

 

Oh, and call me prejudice but I think Microsoft is doing more than just backing up SCO. I think they may be even funding it.
