I love crazy theories like this and I wouldn't put it past Ron.

    Β

Ron mentioned he once had an idea for Guybrush set a 1000 years in the future. So i don't think time travel is out of the question.

The Grog machine is a time machine, calling it now.

And beyond LeChuck just being an evil dude. He might not even be the main villain of this one. Heck, there might not even be a main villain. The website notably does not suggest that we'll be working within the old "LeChuck has new evil plan, Guybrush thwarts evil plan, end of game" paradigm again. Breaking that paradigm might be the decisive step towards a game with "deep currents" – in which the central emotional core of the narrative works, in which the protagonist is humanized through his struggles instead of being a mere projection figure.

Or it could just be another Weltraumliebewachzauberkrieg. πŸ‘½

Thought you could sneak that Devil's Playhouse reference past us, did ya? :pΒ

My first thought is LeChuck. Anyone wanna place some bets lol

I really hope it's LeChuck, but there are lots of characters we haven't heard yet. It could be Elaine, Herman, Wally, Stan, I think if it isn't LeChuck then it'll probably be the Lookout.Β

But yeah...I'm excited and nervous about who they've cast, but I trust that Ron and Khris Brown found someone good. It's just hard to picture anyone else but Earl Boen, and when I try my brain just goes to Adam Harrington, which was servicable but not ideal.Β

Hmm actually yeah we haven't seen anything outside the docks, lookout spot , town or governor mansion which could all be explored together without leaving the map. So its entirely possible we only explore a limited chunk of Melee Island.

My guess is Part 1 is dedicated to Melee for a bit of indulgence in nostalgia and Part 2 onwards is new stuff until we reach Monkey Island. I'd like to think that the teases we're getting have purposely focused on early parts of the game so as not to spoil a good chunk of it. We haven't even seen the carnival or been given even the tiniest hint of how we get from there to pirate world again.Β

So i noticed they've been showing alot of Melee Island.

    Β

Do you think all old locations will be present (circus, forest, bridge, Stan's old ship area, Meathooks house etc)

    Β

Also with the new key shop, do you expect more locations we haven't seen on Melee Island.

I kinda hope Melee Island is limited to the town/docks and the rest of the game is more heavily focused on Brr Muda/Terror Island and any other locations we may not know about. All I hope for is we get something new added to the world that is just as extensive and worthy of exploration as the places we're already familiar with. I hope for example that Brr Muda isn't limited to the courthouse and the building opposite that we saw last week.Β

  6. I can't believe I didn't clock that they were the original pirate leaders! Someone take me to Knuttin Atoll so I can claim a dunce cap :pΒ It makes sense to see them again, given that there's a new trio taking over, it'd be weird to be left wondering where the OG went. The facial expression on Guybrush as he burps is fantastic, clearly they put a lot of effort into putting in plenty of custom animations.Β

    Β

Others have cited the swordfighting book...I wonder if we have to collect a bunch of them for some reason, perhaps to learn whatever the new swordfighting mechanic is? I also like the idea of it being an in-game hintbook and various locations throughout the game have one for when you get stuck.Β

I'll probably do similar to what I did when I played Tales and Thimbleweed this time, which is that, first of all, I turned the hint system way down to the bottom, and then looked up a guide or used the system only when I felt I wasn't having fun anymore.

    Β

I never really regretted looking up the hints when I did, it was either something I don't think I would have thought of for a long time, or something really silly like I didn't realise that I was supposed to return to a particular location because something had changed.

    Β

I played through MI1 with a hint book first time, and for MI2 I chose Lite mode first time... it was a bit later before I developed a desire to try to play the game without help, but it doesn't seem to have harmed my love for the games, so I guess where I am with it all now is sort of ... chilled out. I won't play with a walkthrough or something, but if I want a hint I'll get one.

    Β

I suppose theres something nice in that you can only play the game for the first time once and there's accomplishment in knowing you worked it all out on your own, but hmm... if that involves me wandering aimlessly and using everything with everything else until I hit upon the right solution, maybe I'll like the game better if I just get a hint when I'm truly stuck.

Yeah I think that pretty much aligns with where I'm at, you don't want to stop having fun with the game if you're that stuck, I think at that point looking up hints is fair game. I just have to resist the temptation to look things up the second I get stuck. One good thing about playing immediately upon release is that there's less out there because everyone's playing it at the same time.Β

  8. I'm curious...how old school is everyone planning to go with using the hintsystem, looking up hints online, etc? Personally, I want to try and figure out as much of the game myself as possible, because I always vowed with each new MI to do that as I very quickly used walkthroughs for the first 4 games (heresy, I know). I'm not against using whatever the hint system is so long as it isn't blatantly giving the solution away (I don't think I have to worry about that though, Ron's better than that) or posting in the inevitable hints forum...there's gonna be a hints forum right? And a spoiler talk one seperate from that? I'd hate to accidentally find out the Secret while I'm looking for hints.Β

It's certainly one of the points I disagreed with at the time, and I'm still not entirely clear what the motivation was for making it back in 2013. Reviewers get advance copies because they work on deadlines, and if you want a timely review of your game then either you give them an advance copy or they're going to be under pressure once it's out to finish it as quickly as possible so they can write a review while it's still relevant - or not write one at all. Why would you want to put additional pressure on reviewers or stop them from doing their jobs?

    Β

I suspect though that review copies are probably going to be something Devolver controls

You raise an excellent point. My one concern about review copies going around is the increase of potential spoilers leaking out, like someone less well-versed in the series accidentally giving away what the Secret is because they undervalue its importance, or just someone carelessly laying out the plot beats or the solution to a puzzle they found difficult.Β Β

Clearly I haven't read a lot of adventure game reviews :pΒ

  10. I'm still wondering what Ron's stance is on the press getting advanced copies, seeing as how it was a dot point in his 2013 blog that they wouldn't but he's changed his mind about a lot of things and also there's publisher requirements and all that. Will we be seeing reviews pop up before release? I mean, the Mojo review is ultimately the only one I really care about (as well as what I personally think when I play it), but still, I'm curious.Β
