Ranks?

In a faction, you can rise in rank. First, how many ranks are there? Also, what are the advantages of rising in rank? Do more items become available? I know that stormtroopers and AT-STs are available, but not if your a private. At what rank do you have the option to get these things?

Rank's only function is to limit the amount of faction points you can have, and may also influence faction missions. You can only recruit and use personnel when you are overt. You can only use stormtrooper armor when overt, as well. Same goes for the uniform, though the hat is currently bugged. I've included faction point cost for some of these, beyond colonel I have no idea.

Private

Lance Corporal

Corporal - 1000fp

Sergeant

Staff Corporal

Staff Sergeant 2000fp

Warrant Officer II

Master Sergeant - 3000fp (my current rank, heh)

Sergeant Major

Warrant Officer I - 4000fp

Second Lieutenant

First Lieutenant - 5000fp

Army Captain

Major

Lieutenant Colonel

Colonel - 6000fp

Brigadier General

Major General

Lieutenant General

General

High General

Surface Marshal

Apart from having a nifty rank, the only true purpose of the higher ranks is for the sake of getting faction bases for your city.

Edited to add: I think it would be fair if you weren't allowed to get something as juicy as an AT-ST until you're an officer, but that's just my opinion.

The rank system is (or atleast was) faulty and incorrect. Several ranks where missplaced according to where they are supposed to be.

Take the list mentioned above for instance:

Staff Corporal is actually 1 rank higher than Staff Sergeant (don't ask me why, but that's how it is :p )

Also, I'm about to become a Master Sergeant. I'm now a Staff Sergeant. :) But if you follow the propper ranking system my next rank should be Sergeant Major. :D

I guess someone in the Dev-Team haven't done their homework properly. :p

The list should be like this for the Imperials:

Non-commissioned personell:

(usually do not wear rank plaques)

Privat

Corporal

Sergeant

Staff Sergeant

Staff Corporal

Warrant Officer II

Master Sergeant

Sergeant Major

Warrent Officer I

Commissioned Officers:

Second Lieutenant

Lieutenant

Captain

Major

Lieutenant Colonel

Colonel

High Colonel

Brigadier

Major General

Lieutenant General

General

High General

Surface Marshal

Upper Echelons:

(not attainable in SWG)

Moff

Grand Moff

Supreme Moff (only mentioned as a possible rank around ANH, non has been mentioned ever attaining it. Guess who would have gotten it if the Death Star didn't blow up ;):p )

Grand General

Emperor or nominated executor or proxy

Rebels would look fairly similar up to the upper echelons. It goes straight to the leader after that. They don't seem to have a High Colonel either.
