Prime
I'm not sure how many people around here are into hoops, but I'm looking at picking up either NBA Live 2005 or ESPN NBA 2K5 for the XBox. I'm new to the XBox scene and have only played Live on the PC in the past. I'm having a bit of a hard time finding information about certain aspects of these games, and I'm hoping people here can help me out... Questions: Do both games have "sliders" to help control and tweek various aspects of the gameplay? Do they both have "create a player" and allow said player to be a part of most of the gameplay modes? Do they both have a 1 on 1 mode? Which game provides the closest simulation of a real NBA game? I'd love to hear any comments or reviews on either of these games from Swampies.
ckcsaber
I bought ESPN NBA 2K5 on Friday, and am definitely happy. It looks like Sega is MAJOR competition for EA this year. From what I've heard, NBA Live is basically the same package this year, with a dunk competition thrown in. And Live has NEVER been known for realistic game play. 2K5, on the other hand, has a great track record with realistic game play, and this year’s edition definitely shows it. All movement is momentum based, so players can't turn on a dime and blow past defenders. Posting up is EXTREMLY realistic as well. You can back the defender down, try and spin around him, try and do a hop-step to the hoop for a lay-up or dunk, or just try to shoot a fade away. It's hard to cross people out and drive to the hoop for a dunk in this game. You have to work your way in, and even then it's hard to pull of a crazy move. You can change your lay-up or dunk in mid-air if you think you are about to get blocked. It's a really sweet feature, and provides some jaw dropping replays if you pull it off. Yeah, this game has all the sliders you need to configure the difficulty and fouls. There is a Street mode, with 1 on 1 mode. There is also the 24/7 mode, which was implemented last year, where you create your own player, and train up his stats and face other players across the country. It's a pretty cool feature, almost like a basketball RPG. My main gripe with this game is the Franchise mode, dubbed "The Association". The layout isn't great, and it just seems a little shoddy. They put in this feature where you talk to a random player each week, and have to answer the correct question to raise up team chemistry. It's ok, but not great. You can still do all the major "Franchise" mode stuff, like adjusting salaries, picking up free agents, trading, etc… All in all, this is the most realistic b-ball game I have ever played. I really enjoy it. And it only cost me 20 bucks.

My friends and I like to put ourselves on our favorite teams and battle each other. Just wondering if that aspect is the same as Live as well. And thanks for the great response. ckcsaber
And thanks for the great response No problem. Originally posted by Prime Is this more or less the same as the Live 1 on 1 mode? Yeah, it's exactly the same. I *THINK* there is a 2 on 2 street mode as well. Are you able to just create a player and add them to the normal NBA league rosters? Yeah, you can do that. You can also create a custom team and use them in Franchise mode, although thats nothing new. I'm not sure if you can use a customized player in a normal Live game. I do know that you can use your custom 24/7 character on Live.

BongoBob
Sega is kicking EA's ass with the sports games. NFL 2K5 > Madden 2005 NHL 2K5 > NHL 2005 NBA 2K5 > NBA Live 2005 does anyone else see a trend here?
Mike Windu
I have 2k4 from last year just because it's the same as 2k5... They haven't changed much... dunks are now controllable. Isomotion is alright now..(I rarely used it in 2k4) It seems EA and Sega are switching spots... EA is becoming a bit more realistic.. and Sega is going all... Midway on us...*shudders* My advice: pick up 2k5. While you're at it, pick up NFL 2k5 too. edit: or go to the local gym and get some real game goin on

Mike Windu
Huzzah! Nice to see we have basketball enthusiasts here! I played church ball, and I was going to try out for the high school basketball team... but 1) Coaches suck 2)I'd be kicked off cross country forever! We're like.. the worst team in my city... and not because of lack of talent... the guys that come to my school come from the middle school that wins state year after year... it's a lack of good coaching. Dissappointment. There's always college though
