Yeah, I'd say I fit the mindless consumer mold. I'm terrible at handling my money. Luckily, I've got a decent income, so I can make a few mistakes once in a while.

And I just saw a commercial for the ROTK: EE. It had like 4 discs. Is any of the material worth the purchase?

All of the extended editions are 4 disc sets. :dozey:

I really like the bonus features on the DVDs, I think they're really swell :)

I also have the non-extended versions because they came out on DVD first, and I had to own them :indif:

I sitll don't have RotK:EE. I could never get a straight date on when it was released, and as such it has apparently passed me by :(

I shall rectify this soon tough.

Unless it's not out in the U.S. yet....is it?

Theres a lot of stuff. They talk about the armor they used, there are commentaries which are neat to watch, there's history of the story, there's all kinds of stuff.

At least...on the first to EE's. I dunno about RotK, I haven't got it.

but the extended movie is worth the price, even if it didn't have ANY extra stuff. 40 extra minutes of movie of LotR can't go wrong :D

Thats true, I like the movies a whole lot, but the only thing I don't like in the TT is the way they painted Faramir.

he came across a *bit* better in the TTT:EE wouldnt you agree ?

Im looking forward to seeing the ROTK:EE, as for *re* watching the FOTR and TTT EEs, um...I have better things to do with 6 hours of my time. Dont get me wrong, they are great films, but they are a bit of a freakin ordeal to sit through without your a$$ going numb.....

:p

I think the official release date is the tenth. at least in the uk. But i pre-ordered mine months ago... like everyone else i know.

I'm quite surprised people wouldn't know about the extended editions, they publicised them back when the standard editions came out.

Each year for the last 3 years the film has come out in december, then standard dvd around may and the extended one around november (just before the next film). Its been pretty well publicised.

The extras are insanely huge, everything you want to know about LOTR. the standard ones have the standard trailers and fluff, but the extended ones break down everything they did.

But even if you never watch the special features then the extended versions are SO MUCH BETTER. They add litterally 100s of scenes (mostly the ones from the books that us fans missed) to almost every scene. I can't even watch the theatrical versions now...

The extended FOTR & TT came out in a few cinemas over here las november... i hope that now ALL the extended ones are completed they release them all in the cinema.

I watched TT last night, so i still haven't watched ROTK.

Trust me to upgrade windows the same day my 5hr LOTR arrives....

Actually, I wouldn't go see that. After the 3 1/2 hours of RotK my ass hurt like hell and I think I now have a bladder problem.

Note: I'll assume everyone has seen ROTK, so i'll only put spoiler tags on stuff that is specific to the extended edition.

Theatrical version: TV

Extended Version: EV

Video & Audio: Both awesome as you would expect. What else is there to say...

The scene: First things first: it turns out to be very hard to find an evening with enough free time to watch a 4 hour movie. I started watching at 8pm (after work and dinner) and the first disk finished at 10pm. Then followed a quick half hour call with girlfriend and then onto the second disk... which didn't finish until 12.30 (plus credits).

Luckily my housemates (who wouldn't be interested) were both out all evening, so i got to set myself up in the middle of the room for optimal surround sound, turn off the lights and watch the whole thing uninterupted. :D

Film:

I was surprised by two things about the EV. First, it didn't feel that long while watching it (except the endings, but that was true with the TV). Second, there didn't SEEM to be that many changes to the TV (obviously the extra 45 minutes shows that there were, but it didn't feel as altered as the extended TT or FOTR (which had the biggest improvements imho) )

The major changes were:

Orthanc & Saruman: This was a nice scene that (although not totally acurate to the book) captured the spirit of it quite well. It was nice to see grima again as i liked his character, and on the whole was a nice addition but quite self contained. Though saruman did manage to plant some seeds of doubt in Theodin's mind that played out a bit later on in the film.

Paths of the dead: Added a big set peice that was "ok" but not really essential. Also added more twists to the "negotiations" with the dead. Also added them leaving the paths to see the black ships, and the subsequent attack on the ships.

This was a perfectly ok addition, but not really essential in any way. Slightly spoiled the "surprise" return of aragorn in the battle, but then i never thought that was done very well anyway.

Houses of healing: I had been looking foreward to these scenes for ages as they are some of the most important in the book, and i thought their omission from the TV messed up a few plot points (especially the faramir/eoywn bit).

I was rather disappointed by these scenes. They were very short and didn't even mention anything about kingsfoil (which they mentioned in FOTR), or eowyn and merry's wounds, or the king "having the hands of a healer". Shame.

Sam & frodo in mordor: These were fairly small additions, but quite nice in that they added a bit to the struggle to cross mordor, which they positively zapped across in the TV. Good, minor additions.

Mouth of Sauron: On the one hand i was pleased to see this added, especially the bit where he told them frodo was dead. On the other hand they completely missed (both here, and when aragorn used the palantir, and when they discussed attacking mordor) one of my fave bits from the book, namely when aragorn starts refring to his precious and acting like gollum, to convince sauron that he has the ring... and that would be the only explanation for him being arrogant or stupid enough to attack mordor with a tiny force. Again a slightly dissappointing addition.

Other scenes: many of the above additions were actually shorter than you would expect, so i think that a lot of the new 45 minutes came from minor additions that added depth to characters (drinking game: ok, more aragorn+eowyn: ok, more gollum: good, more merry & pippin: good). The rest probably came from added battle scenes, as (and i may be imagining this) i thought the battle was longer and more detailed and flowed better. The extra addtion of the Witch King vs Gandalf and more eowyn vs witch king was great.

Overall, while i thought some of the major additions were shorter than i expected (and in some cases not as good as i'd hoped) i thought that a lot of the little additions really helped flesh out the world and make the battle flow better.

In short, this is a stunning film. Not massively improved from the TV, but an improvement nontheless.

I still think the endings drag on a bit, with too many hugging hobbits... but then they say in the commentary that they are ending THREE films, not one. And that is a fair point.
