jp-30 Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 For a bit of fun, I've started reskinning characters from the LEGO Star Wars game. You can check progress & developments in this fbtb.net thread. There's a more general (scripting, model swapping) LEGO SW modding thread here. Unfortunately there are some limitations with what can be done, depending on the whim of the programmer who made the UVmaps for the skin wraps over the models. (The Leia above should have brown arms, but the skinmap uses the same colour block for the torso base and the arms, sadly, and that's the only model with suitable hair to convert Padme to Bespin Leia). Still, plenty of scope to get reasonably close approximations of existing official minifigs, and of course endless possibilities to make custom minifigs working within the limitations of the skin meshes. I will be writing a tutorial and including the texture extraction/insertion scripts in a Lego Star Wars Mod tools.zip in the next month or so.
jp-30 Posted August 4, 2005 Author Posted August 4, 2005 Unfortunately I can't colour the hip piece independently of the torso due to the skinmap pulling the textures from both pieces on this model from the same area of the skin. It should be dark brown. I may try fudging it and adding a brown strip to the bottom of the torso front decal & see if that looks any good. And I don't think he ever came with a cape in the LEGO Sets (but he looks better in the game with one regardless). All in all, not too bad...
drunkymonkey Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 they're great, if only I had lego stars wars on pc...
jp-30 Posted September 17, 2005 Author Posted September 17, 2005 The good news is that I have recently received permission from the developers/publishers/lucasarts to mod the game (the EULA doesn't actually allow it). The condition is that mods be posted to lucasfiles.com. I am currently writing a 'LEGO Star Wars' skinning tutorial so you can all have a go at skinning soon enough - here's the character I talk you through in the tutorial... I'll keep you posted when it goes live... What I actually need is to find some scripting whizz to write an installer/uninstaller program / utility that will allow the mods to overwrite the existing character files, shunting the overwritten one to a 'safe' directory, and having the ability to restore the original one back again when you didn't want to play with the skinned character any longer.
drunkymonkey Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 oooh, that vader model is great. did you make it or was it the original model?
Benny Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 I really like Inno Setup. If you dont fancy doing it yourself, I can make you an installer
jp-30 Posted September 17, 2005 Author Posted September 17, 2005 The Vader is in-game. All I do is reskin existing models. That TIE pilot was a stormtrooper, Boba ett was Jango Fett & Old Obi-Wan was Young Obi-Wan. BG, thanks for that link, I'll take a looksie, and may come back to you if I need some help - cheers!
jp-30 Posted October 14, 2005 Author Posted October 14, 2005 My tutorial is now up (though still a work-in-progress)... jp-30's LEGO Star Wars Skinning tutorial
EmteeMoe Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 Thank you so much for all your work jp-30. I was interested in modding this game quite some time ago but I ran across a post you made somewhere detailing the legal difficulties preventing us so I stopped thinking about it. Now that we are allowed to mod the game, I am definatly planning to get involved. I am not sure how much I can help, but I do have some programming experience and I will start working on a mod manager as soon as this semester is over (only one week more ) Again thanks for getting the ball rolling! in case you have not seen this already... http://xbox.ign.com/articles/704/704458p1.html [edit]Hmm... I just realized how old this thread was. Sorry for resurrecting it.
jp-30 Posted May 4, 2006 Author Posted May 4, 2006 Nah, thanks for posting here. Our new defacto thread for LSW modding is here; http://www.minifigcustomizationnetwork.com/forum/1962 If you can assist with a mod manager, that would be amazing. Email me once your semester is over (my address is at the end of my tutorial) and we can talk about what the manager needs to do, which is basically (inso far as character reskins go) just copying and pasting files from a mod directory directory to the character directory, and restoring the original file when done. It would be great to also insert an icon into the icon file (things.nup), but that can come later. And mangaLord who does level editing may require the mod-manager to do some other copy-paste-restore functions along the same lines as the character swapping.
H. A. N. S. O. L. O. Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Cool TIE Pilot, JP! Edit: Can you make a cutscene overwriting tutorial too? I can't get the "lost" cutscenes to work.
H. A. N. S. O. L. O. Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 I found some hidden extras in the map_e_old.txt file (but I can't get them to work, please help me if you know how). The first one is something for the walkie-talkies, proably disables them. The second, third and fourth one is... something. They are called FMV. The fifth and last one is something for the Bounty Hunter rockets, proably lets the player throw rockets when he is using Jango.
H. A. N. S. O. L. O. Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I've made Clown Dooku and Ghost Maul. Thanks for the guide!
NathanKj Posted November 28, 2010 Posted November 28, 2010 My tutorial is now up (though still a work-in-progress)... jp-30's LEGO Star Wars Skinning tutorial 404 ERROR HAPPENS!!! I CANT GET TO IT!! can you make a .txt file of it and upload it to mediafire?
eners Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 when i go on the link to the tutorial, it says 404 ERROR. It says it every way i try to get to it! Is there anyway i can get to it? Also, how do you edit the hgp files? I can find one reference to that extension but it definately can't be the same one.
jp-30 Posted January 13, 2011 Author Posted January 13, 2011 I changed ISPs and the old site was lost. I'll dig it off my old PC and upload to my new web host today. As far as I know, the models haven't been cracked, so not sure if editing hgp files is possible.
jp-30 Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 Couldn't find the files on my PCs, meaning they must be on another one that's in the shed now. I'll try and dig it out over the weekend. I did find the site at archive.org, though it's incomplete (missing some graphics). I popped the files from Archive.org back on my site though, so there is at least something now at http://www.hansen.net.nz/lswtutorial/ The URLs reference the archived version. I'm not spending time fixing when I'm hoping to recover my original files in the next 2 days. A lot of it is obsolete now unfortunately - the whole thing with installing perl scripts and downloading 2 perl utilities to rip and insert textures is no longer necessary. A better all-in-one utility was made, but that's on the archived PC too. So feel free to take a look through the tutorial, but I advise against starting any skinning until I find the rest of the images and the new texture extract/insert program. This makes the process way simpler and faster.
eners Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 thanks, but is sparedlife's website down or something? i can't get on to it
jp-30 Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 Yes, it disappeared a year or two back. The perl scripts linked to in my tutorial are still active (but obsolete). I have Spared-Life's utility somewhere, so will put it up on my site for download when I find the old files.
jp-30 Posted January 22, 2011 Author Posted January 22, 2011 My website is http://www.hansen.net.nz/lswtutorial/ Though I haven't managed to get all the files as yet.
eners Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Has anyone tried modding any other lego games?
sw123321 Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Your web page with tutorial is not working, jp-30, please say me(e-mail me) how to reskin lsw!
Djtagg Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Where can i find the char files in the game Lego Star wars 2?
