The_Maker
Well, ever since I picked up animator and made very horrid looking shapes because I had no idea what I was doing I more or less convinced myself I shouldn't model. However, since I have seen the great work you guys have been doing here at Holowan, expecially the USM team, I have been inspired to go back into modeling and give it a try! So, here is my first attmept at an (unfinished) lightsaber. Still a lil confused as to how UV map works but I do not think its a big deal since animator has an easy skinner tool. http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/7715/screen13qr.jpg http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/7572/screen27bc.jpg Comments and constructive critism are highly welcomed as this is my first try... T7nowhere
What program are you using to build the model with? well it doesn't really matter aslong as you can get it into gmax. Is the hilt textured or are those separate meshes. If they are separate don't forget to attach all the pieces together as a single mesh before you rig the model to one of the default hilts. The_Maker
I am using anim8or, don't know much about gmax though. Guess I will need to find something that can export/create mdl files since anim8or can't <_< Edit: And the hilt is textured with the exclusion of the button, that is an individual mesh since its kinda hard to make round objects out of square ones, I just drewa a new mesh instead. General Kenobi
Just make sure whatever anim80r or other programs you find out there will save natively with compat. or export something that gmax, 3dstudio max, etc will be able to utilize. It would be a shame to put out a nice saber and can't get it in the game Great job for your first attempt General Kenobi
svösh
yup good for your first but your final saber mesh has to all be one piece the way mdlops replacer works is it swaps out the old mesh in place of your mesh. Because the default hilt was one solid mesh we have build ours the same way. In [g] max performing a union Boolean function on that will make it all one part mesh. I don’t know anima8tor so I’m not sure how to achieve the same thing with it, but I would definitely suggest looking in to gmax in terms of modeling tools for it’s price = free it’s hands down the very best and most user friendly. Though milkshape has all the importer exporter functions it’s modeling tools are old school but if you get [milkshape] http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/ms3d/download.html trial version you may be able to convert to .obj both gmax and max can import the newtek Lightwave .obj native format Hope this helps svösh
