The Doctor
I want to get into modding, but I need ideas to get me started. I know a bit about modding, but I don't know how to place items in game. I tried using the tutorial by RedHawke, but I didn't understand it... I need either an easier to follow walk-through, or someone telling me what to do, as I'm doing it over MSN or something (which I don't think anyone wants to do). I know how to create an enemy/character, but not make the game look for that character's utc file without replacing another enemy/character, or I'd be able to do it easily... Achilles
Which game are you trying to place items in? For TSL, you're going to have to mostly rely on scripts. For KotOR, you can also use scripts, however in some cases you can use a placeable without having to learn scripting. Check out this tutorial for more info. The Doctor
Ok, I can get items into KotOR now, but I still need ideas for items to place.
90SK
Try your hand at modeling! Maybe masks, or something. I mean, we can never have enough modelers. Besides, if you learn it now it'll be a great skill to have in the future.
The Doctor
I'd need a walk-through for the first time, or I might seriously mess up my game, or fail miserably, utterly shattering what little self-esteem I have.
90SK
There are some good modeling tutorials out there. Most of the ones here are specific to a certain item, so I suggest you look for gmax / 3dsmax tutorials on google.
The Doctor
k, thanx for the tip! I'm working on the simplest kind of mod right now: implants/belts/armbands. They're just a single uti file each. SIMPLICITY IS AWESOME!
The_Maker
If you want a good first timer idea, try making unique party member items, no modeling or skinning, just some uti editng. Like a Bastila lightsaber, and a Mission Armor, etc. That is always a good place to start Good Luck.
The Doctor
I've already done some mods, I just haven't posted any, as none of them are really that good. But thanks for the tip!
90SK
^^^ Bad idea. You should always try to post your mods, even if you think they're bad. It's a great way to get feedback and hone your skill. But yeah, seriously, try to get familiar with dialogue and script editing as early as possible, before dipping too much into anything else. Once you've got a basic knowledge of those, you'll have much more leeway to do what you want later on.
