manoman81
I need a cheap web host for a class. I would like to keep using it as a online porfolio after the semester as well. I really, really hate stuff like geocities and crap like it. Do you guys have any suggestions?
Joetheeskimo
Do you need PHP or anything special? Just enter your hosting specs at http://www.clickherefree.com/hosting-free/ and see what comes up. There are some actual free, ad-free hosts out there as long as you don't need anything special. Joetheeskimo
Don't rely on what the search engine tells you ,visit the site itself and see for yourself if it's what you're looking for.
manoman81
Joe, this is pretty cool, thanks man! Yeah, I echo that! The workshop I'm taking is for Front Page. I figure I'll actually learn coding and stuff later when I really need it and be done with FP. Long story short, I am doing 2 projects in one and the end result will a site. The only real thing I will need is streaming video abilities for a final presentation.
jon_hill987
I found this.... SourceForge.net This is for the serious game developer in the open source genre. Offers up to 100 MB of space, and with excellent managment tools for your game project. FileCommander.com Unlike many of the other services we suggest, this hosting offer DOES allow large file sizes (i.e. programs), so long as they are uploaded in a compressed format like zip. Anyone may upload a freeware program to their site, not just the author. Anyhow, FileCommander.com currently hosts files which are up to 50MB in size. They do not host websites. Like other similar services, users may pay money to access FileCommander's fast server. illicitdev.net Illicit Developer Network is more than just free Web hosting. They have created a nice community of game developers with articles, tutorials, a forum, and much more. They currently (as of Oct 10, 2002) have two free hosting options both with unlimited bandwidth: (i) 25 MB diskspace, CGI, PHP, and without ad banners; (ii) 50 MB diskspace, CGI. PHP, mySQL database, and with ad banner. WeeN.Co.UK Free hosting with your URL as htp://www.ween.co.uk/~USERNAME/. You get virtually unlimited diskspace (limit 100 MB). Other hosting features are CGI, SSI, PHP, mod_perl, Apache, ASP, and unlimited bandwidth (FTP only). This hosting company offers free hosting but ONLY for Gamehippo users - so you have to mention that you are from Gamehippo.com. The only requirement is that you place their ad banner on top of your homepage. SiliconHosts.com 25Mb of web space, supports ASP, CGI and iHTML. You are required to include a logo and link to SiliconHosts.com on your page. According to their site: "...there are no bandwidth constraints with any of our plans! This means that you can transfer as much data whenever you like for as long you like." Also taking into account that they use a rather unintrusive picture link instead of pop-ups and banners, this is an impressive free deal! biz.ly 100MB webspace, unlimited bandwidth, website manager, free domain name (http://www.yourname.biz.ly) Brinkster.com 30MB space, 500MB monthly bandwidth Anycities.com Formerly offered webspace under the name Stormloader.com. 50 MB of disk space and unlimted bandwidth, no popup ads. There is also an filesize limit of 1 MB (not officially mentioned on their site). They don't offer FTP, instead they offer a Web-based file manager (reportedly very slow) Dreamwater.com 50 MB of disk space and unlimted bandwidth, no popup ads. They only allow these file types to be uploaded: .html, .htm, .txt, .gif, .jpg and .jpeg (you would have to store your zip/exe files somewhere else unless you do some trickery with the naming of your files) FreeServers.com 12 MB space, popup ads, you will receive occational promotional emails, but the biggest drawback is that the maximum file limit is 200 KB! web1000.com 50 MB space FortuneCity 100 MB space, max filesize is 3 MB, popup ads, you will receive occational promotional emails (which you can unsubscribe to) Tripod 50 MB, popup ads (can be turned off if users want to use embedded ads instead), supports CGI scripting,Java Tucows Offers unlimited file space and bandwidth for game developers of quality games (at their discretion). Tucows will also professionally review games for free. Download statistics are available quarterly. Additional services such as daily download statistics are available for an additional charge. Tucows will not host web sites but will provide multiple download locations for any game accepted for the site. AngelFire ? MB ("Chances are, more than you'll ever need", according to Angelfire's own account information). Research (which may be outdated) indicates that Angelfire offers up to 30MB of free space. Users start with a 5MB space limit and must apply for more space in 5MB chunks. Users can choose between popup windows and embedded ads. According to Cnet, the tools for page creation/uploading on Angelfire are horrible. TopCities 150 MB, 0.9 MB filesize limit, max 1 GB monthly bandwidth, popup ads Zero Catch 150 MB of webspace Escalix 150 MB of webspace, offers enhancements like guestbooks and messageboards No-Frills 20 MB of webspace eSmartStart 100MB of space, as well as services like e-mail addresses, guestbooks, and counters Xoasis 10MB of webspace, full CGI and PHP support, pop-ups but lacks regular banners. Qwik Pages 100 MB of webspace Crosswinds "Unlimited" web space, pop-up ads WebSamba 30 MB web space
Joetheeskimo
The workshop I'm taking is for Front Page. A workshop? No offense, man, but why are you going to a workshop? FrontPage is designed to be self-explanatory, so you don't have to take a chunk out of your day to go to a class on it.

It's more for Instructional Technology, use in a classroom, and how to effectively design a site for educational use. Basically for me to get one more BS class under my belt before I try and apply to get into grad school for next fall. I know it's not hard at all to use FP. And, I don't have to take a chunk out of my day to go to a class. All online. Thanks for you help regardless.
