Civ IV

i'm kinda curious here: has anybody played the previous Civilization games enough to recommend Civ IV??? Gamespot gave Civ IV one of the highest ratings i've ever seen in the past three years, so i'm kinda wondering. i've heard its a turn-based strategy game that spans from the stone age to the near-future (like Empire Earth), only you get to conquer the world (unlike Empire Earth). so, comments, recommendations, words of wisdom?? ;)

I haven't played Civ IV yet, but I'll get it as soon as I can.

I've played Civ 2 and 3 and loved them both. The gameplay is absolutely wonderful and it made me lose a few nights of sleep, telling myself:"Just one more turn."

There were weird problems with the old Civ games which allowed spearmen t destroy tanks (yeah).

If you're looking for a deep managing game, the Civ serie certainly provides.

Oh, and if you're looking for epic battles, Civ is not the game for you. Being aggressive and attacking everyone is the first step in getting annihilated :)

that's what i heard. anyways, when i'm over my 'Rome: Total War' (and the incredible expansion) binge, i'll probably migrate over to Civ IV. i guess that means i'll be checking out Civ IV before i get to play F.E.A.R. oh well, there is a time and season for everything, and i just hope this strategy 'season' doesn't make me jump the gun for AoE: III in the process......

The Civilization games in general (I've only Played Civ I and Civ III yet) are turn-based strategy games where you are the leader of a fledgling human tribe with one small town at 4000 B.C. and is tasked with turning it into a lasting, continent-spanning civilization that lasts from the stone age into the modern times.

You can pick your civilization (and which other computer controlled Civilizations you want to compete against) from a list of real historical human civilizations. Though the timeline is of course whacked, where a Cleopatra-led Egypt may square off against a Mao-led China. :)

While battle and conquest is a big aspect of the games, it's not the only one. It's in fact possible (but usually hard) to win the game without ever going to war. It's as much about diplomacy, trade, culture, research and building cities and infrastructure as it is about battle.

A word of warning about the Civ games if you haven't played any of them before. They are an immense time-sink. A whole day may pass when you feel like you've only been playing for a few minutes, and it's surprisingly difficult to stop playing. Only play Civ if you don't have any deadlines or anything important that must be done any time soon. :)

I might have to pick this up. Iv'e been meaning to play one of them. I have a dos version of one of the eariler games, but never really played it.

I fell in love with the game Alpha Centauri and its expansion pack Alien Crossfire. It dosn't work on windows XP, though. They have an XP patch, but the dern thing dosn't work! So its been some time since I've played it.

If Civ is anything like Alpha C, I will love it, no doubt.

I don't know if I should pick this one up, however I think not. I've got civ3:CTP 1 and 2. I rarely play them these days, since there are other newer games out, that are somewhat similar, however they're not turn-based (or only partly, generally leaving the combat system RTS, and the campaign system turn based). I think it would be time for the civ games to step into the (partly) RTS realm as well, or perhaps make 2 games, one RTS and one turn based. It has been rpoven tht it can be done, so now do it properly.

Generally the Total War style games have the map but not the timeline, and the Age of Empires/Empire Earth/Rise of Nations games have the timeline, but not the map.

Civ III at least (don't know much about Civ4 yet) was made by the same team that made SMAC, so the games have similarities. Though CIV3 doesn't have quite the dark, despairing feeling of SMAC, feels a bit "happier" in a way. :)

(On a side-note, Civilization:Call to Power is not really a "Civ" game despite the name. It was made by a different team, and has quite a few changes to the core concepts. I believe they even got sued because of the similar name or something... :) )

SMAC and SMACX work just fine under Windows XP... at least they work on my machine. I've played it a lot on this computer and never had any problems. What kind of problems are you getting?

I think that would be a grave mistake, as the different game types appeal to different people. I would never buy the game it it was turned into a Real-time Strategy rather than turn-based. I like having plenty of time to think things through, organize and plan ahead. Real-time games where you have to keep track of a lot of things going on simultaneously tend to make me stress out completely, which is no fun.

Since the Civilization games are one of the best selling game series ever I don't think I'm the only one feeling that way :)

Well, the load screen comes up (the one with the airplane). Then a message comes up saying "This CPU is not supported, you may still be able to run the game, however, errors are possible."

I click "ok" and it just returns to windows. This is after I installed the patch.

I don't know if it would make a difference, but I use the Planetary Pack.

If you can tell me how to get this to play on my PC, I will be so happy! I'd have to make you one of my crappy text pics! hehe

That dreaded thing. Open 'Alpha Centauri.ini' and make sure under [PREFERENCES] it says:

ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1

That worked for me, at least. The error message still shows up, but the game starts. You will need the XP patch, too.

EDIT: ARGHH!

When I try to start a game it gives me this message.

TERRANX.ICD has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

It comes up right after the select rules screen.....

EDIT2: Nevermind. I reinstalled the patch and it works now. Thanks again!
