Designer Diary #4 - Audio in a Galaxy far far away

Before reading that interview I didn't really pay enough attention to the audio in the demo. Now that he pointed out some of the details, I really appreciate the game more fully. I played the game again with a really good set of head phones, and wow... He's right about the little sounds for all the unit animations. There are sounds that I didn't even notice on my pc speakers (asteroids hitting my ships for example). I'm really looking forward to hearing the rest of the environments, units, and characters in the full version. On the small map included in the demo it's not too difficult to keep track of your forces, but on a larger map the unit announcements will surely be a key factor in managing wide-spread troops. I also think it's great that they included a greater variety of unit responses. The extra lines read by the actors don't come cheap, so Petroglyph really went the extra mile towards making this a better RTS game. There are many games that make me want to turn off the sound because I grow tired of hearing "moving", "attacking", and "yes sir" over and over ad infinitum. Even with the limited scope of the demo, it's an audible treat to play.

Asteroids hitting ships?? Many sub-sounds??? Geez, i've the audio to Dolby Surround (Soundblaster Live! Audigy 24bit) and haven't heard anything...........should i go get headphones or the sounds will be clearer in the final game?

Sometimes you have to zoom in close. Distance makes a difference. I didn't notice the asteroids until after I read the interview and deliberately zoomed in on a star destroyer in an asteroid field in cinematic mode. Yeah, good headphones sound better than speakers, especially for the little things like echos and wind. I also have a 24 bit Audigy. Just for kicks, try turning off the EAX and then back on, to hear the difference in cinematic mode. I know, I get carried away. Oh well, I'm a freak AND a geek. :-)
