Astrotoy7
Hello. I know there are some tech savvy people around so Id like to ask if anyone knows about wireless setups r can direct me to a good place to find out. This is what Im after: Compy A: Desktop. Has wLAN card. Also directly connected to wireless router. Compy B: Notebook. Centrino wireless thingy on board. gets onto the net via wireless router with no fuss. I basically want Compy B to be able to access Compy A's shared folders (and if possible vice versa). Ive tried the the networking wizards in windows but they just aint working ot right. Each compy detects the router fine but refuse to talk to each other I cant figure out why.... *free puppy and candy to anyone who can help out mtfbwya
RevanA4
do you have a firewall on either of your computers? also hit the windows key and press pause/break at the same time. go to the computer name tab. click the change button and make them so they have the same work group. If you have a firewall make sure that it isn't blocking network traffic to your computer. most firewalls have a wizard that will make the firewall aware of your network. Astrotoy7
thanks for the tips revan. I got to the stage where i got both compys up on the same workgroup but couldnt access them But theyve since dropped off without me having touched a thing. Networking sux. But Ive already thought of alternate solutions to this problem so will go to them as they are much less frustrating to implement mtbwya

I'm using a D-link Airplus XtreamG DI-624 and have many laptops in the house and I run Wireless on my Desktop when using Xbox live. and I have no problems what so ever. however no computer in the house can access my computer but thats because I've blocked access to my computer from others in the house. >_> everybody but me runs IE so its a safety thing

Char Ell
IIRC you use Windows XP with no service packs or just SP1? Is this on both computers? Windows XP has a funky file sharing system called simple file sharing. I don't like it and use a different type of file sharing, the kind commonly used in businesses, but SFS may work for you. You can refer to this MS support article for how to steps: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040/en-us From what you describe it doesn't sound like this is a wireless network issue as much as it is a file sharing issue. You would likely have the same problem if both computers were using standard network cabling. @ RTG - Thanks for the keyboard shortcut to open the system properties window. I didn't know about that before but I'm sure I'll find uses for it in the future.
RevanA4
well to remove simple file sharing just use the following steps control panel ---> flolder options click on the view tab Scroll all the way down to the bottom and deselect Simple File sharing now in the properties of the folders and files you will now have a security tab. if the security tab is there you have gotten ride of simple file sharing you will have to add the workgroup\users to the permissions. but becareful as it is case sensitive
dede_frost
I have 3 comps and 1 lap top in my house all on wireless lan, and I use Window's file sharing system (although, I got to admit, it sux). What u want to do is run the wizard, and when it asks you how ur computer is connected to the internet, click on other, now some other options will appear, and you shpuld select one that sais that the computers do not share a connection. but are connected to each other. Now, make sure u select the same connection on both computers and finish the wizard. That should enable file sharing. PS: make sure ur using ur own wireless network, as oposed to ur neighbours connection (sometimes that happens).
