Guest garyah99
Hey gang! I got an E-Mial from someone calling themselves "monicabellm@excite.com" in California. I opened it because I was expecting an E-Mail form someone named Monica, but it wasn't what I was expecting. Immediately afterward, I received a suspicious E-Mail from someone in my personal address book. When I scanned the attachment with Norton, it came back as infected. I'm betting the first E-Mail scanned my personal directory them automatically sent me the infected file. Be aware of E-Mails form this address!! Commander 598
Its probably the same Virus thats been going around for 2 months now. They all have different emails and subjects but the message is the same. What was the message? I believe the message is: Hi! How are you? I send you this file in order to have your advice See you later. Thanks The file usually is .doc.pif. And I say its been going around for 2 months. ------------------ Official Forum Nuclear Terrorist & God of Insanity [This message has been edited by Commander 598 (edited August 13, 2001).]
Guest Zoom Rabbit
Anymore I delete e-mails if I don't recognize the sender... Kinda like dousing the mailbox with a fire extinguisher every morning in case there's a bomb in there.

Poor Bastard
I think everybody who got infected by the "Hi! How are you bla bla bla" virus should be beaten to death with spoons. That would clear out something around 90% of the world's population, or as I like to call them, the idiots.

That's exactly the text of the first E-Mail I received. As I said, the only reason I opened that one up is because I was EXPECTING a message from someone named Monica. I DID NOT open the attachment of the second E-Mail. Am I infected anyway becaus e of the first one??
Guest Zoom Rabbit
598 is infected with Borg nanoprobes, not a computer virus. We've been over this. [This message has been edited by Zoom Rabbit (edited August 13, 2001).]
edlib
Someone sent me a couple of these while I was in California. Fortunately I did manage to check my mail out there using a friend's Powerbook. Macs don't seem to be affected by this one, so I lucked out. I deleted them without looking at them. The attachements were in .zip.lnk format. I was lucky to have read something a few weeks before saying NEVER OPEN ANY ATTACHMENT WITH 2 EXTENTIONS. I usually virus-scan every attachment I get out of habit now, even from people I trust. I now update my Norton definitions as soon as booting up the computer each day, and I keep my firewall (ZoneAlarm) locked to incoming and outgoing traffic anytime I'm not using a connected program. I'm not quite sure what these virus writers are hoping to achieve. I mean if they do succeed in shutting down the entire internet, which seems to be thier goal lately, what are they going to do then? Guest garyah99
Ummm....598??? I did an archive search of the forums under your username and the only post you made regarding viruses was on Nov 21st 2000. Am I missing something??
Guest garyah99
Ooops. My bad. I found your thread 598, dated July 26. Only problem is, I licked on the link and it went to something called "The Commander's Chair" or something like that, but there was nothing about viruses. Guest Jabba The Hunt
I got that email on the very first day it came out, it was so obviouly a virus. ------------------ "Its Going down his leg i think we are going to have to amputate. edlib
Originally posted by Poor Bastard: I found that out through something called common ****ing sense. Yeah, but how many people really even look at the attachment extentions people are sending them, especially from people they know? They don't. They just open them without thinking about it most of the time, which is why these things get spread so far. I never used to look at the attachments that got sent to me from other people at work, or from one of my relatives before opening it. The only reason I do it now is simple paranoia. This was the first time anybody has sent me anything along these lines.
JR2000Z
I wonder if you forward the same e-mail back to the sender? Would they be stupid enough to open their own mail?
edlib
Hmmm... good idea. But it would only work for the very first infection. Otherwise you would be sending back to a machine that's already infected. The fact is that most machines that get infected instantly send a copy of the infected e-mail to everybody on that user's address book. Not a great way too keep your friends, even though it's not at all your fault. I still don't understand the kind of jollys you get when doing this. "Hmmm... I love computers, and the interenet is really cool! But I'm soooo bored,... I know! I'll write some code that will render all of it useless! That will be cool!" Somebody explain this to me, if that's possible, please!

edlib
No doubt. And I thought it was bad when kids used to blow up people's mailboxes,... now it global-economic cyber-terrorism. *sniff* They grow up so fast these days... Hey! Come to think of it this is just the virtual version of vandalizing somebody's mailbox! Except instead of just pissing your neighbors off, you can bring down the entire information superhighway to a screeching halt, and cause the collapse of the world economy, causing billions in damage. It's really the same thing when you think about it!

Flying Beastie
My usual machine (the one I'm not on right now 'cause I'm in another city) uses Outlook Express. Good: -Reduces most incoming Email virii to incoherent gobbledygook (unfortunately, it does the same for most of the incoming Email*). -Querys twice before opening attachments. Bad: -Automatically opens any message selected, meaning that if a virus does get through, I can't delete it without opening it first.
