I wonder if theres much differences between the first and second game, since there's different developers (but it's still the same engine, right?). The charecter development isn't "as" great in k2, but the charecters they do have are amazing. Also, the storyline gets REALLY confusing. Feagildin Posted August 1, 2006 Share Posted August 1, 2006 Well, as far as combat goes, a lot of the feats have been powered up. Power attack, for example, is actually useful now. Well, improved and master power attack, at least. Not all the quests are completeable, without mods at least. That part really stinks for those of us with dial up. LoL Skills are vastly more important, as they allow you to create the most powerful upgrades for items. That's all I can think of at the moment. Achilles Posted August 1, 2006 Share Posted August 1, 2006 The game was changed in so many ways that it might be difficult to list them all. Skills are much more useful. There are more feats and many of the continuing feats have been changed. An influence system has been added and your party NPCs' alignment changes accordingly. New items. New upgrades. New animations. New planets. The story is darker and definitely not conducive to spoon-feeding. You'll need to play it many times (using different genders and alignments) to get all the pieces. Once you have all the pieces, you'll still have to put them together yourself. Some people didn't like this. Other people loved it. The ending was rushed due to time constraints, and there are some hints of nifty things that never really materialized. The ending is somewhat confusing if you're not paying copious attention to your dialogue options. Somewhat anticlimactic, in my opinion. That said, there are a large number of small improvements in the game (feats, weapon and armor upgrades, the workbench--too many to list). Nothing huge, but nice. The influence system that Obsidian put into the game, if not perfect, made for some interesting conversation and gameplay choices. It was kind of neat to be able to influence your companions' alignment one way or another. If you've played the first game, you won't have much trouble jumping right into the second. The portraits have moved to another part of the screen, and there are a few more "use item or power" buttons, but otherwise it's exactly the same. You can pick up KotOR2 and play it just as you did KotOR1. So I agree with Phantom Joker, that you can jump straight into KotOR2. The problem in KotOR2 is, as others have said, that a lot of the game was cut, and it hurts the plot in the end. You won't notice that until you're about 70% or more through the game, however, and until then it's all just as good as in KotOR1 (assuming you like the characters, that is, but then only you can tell that). I like KotOR2, and I actually think the plot is better. Because it is unfinished, however, while KotOR1 was not, I find KotOR1 to be the marginally better game. KotOR2 with the Restoration Project (some modders are restoring most of the cut content) will definitely be better than KotOR1. The major shift in the game is an Influence system, where your companions like you more or less depending on what you say to them or what choices you make, while they are around to witness them. It's a good idea, but not always implemented well, since it can lead to some really strange reactions (like when the Handmaiden scolds you for doing evil things and you lose influence with her, even though you're both heavily dark sided). If you loved Revan in KotOR1, however, you should brace yourself and not expect to see him/her in the sequel. Revan is mentioned often, though.
