SW: A Tactical RPG ?

Greetings all!

Not sure how to start this thread off really. For the past hour or so I've been kicking around the idea of trying assemble a team of people to perhaps modify one of the many current game engines available, into a tactical RPG based on the SW universe. (Haven't put this into Holowan as I doubt modding any of the KoToR games in this way is even remotely possible, and this'll get viewed by a broader spectrum of people).

I've been a huge fan of RPGs for as far back as I can remember, and tactical ones (e.g Final Fantasy Tactics, Front Mission series) have always manged to draw me in more than any other type. Also being an unrelenting SW fan, I thought combining the two genres would just about be the ultimate game.

Of course there is the massive snag that I have no experience in programming, modelling and am at best an average creative writer. So this is where I bring my case before you, my fellow Star Wars fans.

Would you like so see such a game?

Would you like to participate in creating one?

Thanks for reading!

This is an interesting concept, though major revamps like the one you are talking about require a handy bunch of dedicated people, mostly programmers and graphics artists. I'm average at the latter, but I could be a part of the storyline and scriptwriting (the artistic one).

I'd like to see such a game, mostly due to the lack of Star Wars RTS games. I mean, you can't play GB or EaW till the end of the world, can you? :p

I wonder what modern game engine is sophisticated enough to allow a good TC into the RTS field. The Unreal engine's pretty good and the content in Republic Commando can be put to good use that way... The Quake engine's great too, especially the new one with all its graphical wonders.

So, this might be possible if we all pull it off together, but to my cynical eyes, its still a little too far...

You'd probably have to use a game/engine that's for a StarWars game already and modify to suit your idea. LucasArts legal department have been quite diligent in shutting down any fan-made StarWars conversions planned for other games in the past.

What's the major difference between a KotOR-style RPG and a "tactical" RPG?

Well traditionally tactical RPG's were 3D isometric view battlefields, with 2D character sprites. More recent ones use total 3D with a panable camera. But what puts them apart from most is the battle system. It's turn based, with each character moving about the map, attacking or using an item/magic etc before going onto the next one. Then it'd be the AI's turn to do the same.

Here's a pic to give you an idea

Dubbed "tactical" rpg's because more often than not you'd have your behind handed to you (always outnumbered), and you'd have to strategise to win.

As for using an existing LA engine, anyone have any experience with modding any others?

Seems like a fun idea. I would love to see the character models (would they be the same as in TSL but miniature or all new?). Seems like a buttload of work, though.

I'm hoping they'd all be new. Bit moot though as no one has volunteered yet :D

We already have A Star Wars RTS game SW Empire at war. Now I haven't started playing it or modding it yet but I would imagine this game platform would be the most ideal to pursue your endeavors from.

I did think that EaW might be a good start, but given the current mods out i don't think it's that flexible. The Source engine seems to be the TC modder's choice these days given it's versitility.
