The Evolution of Video Games

First game i played on the PC was a Test Drive 4 demo and shortly after that was Need for Speed 2 the one where you could drive a UFO in a Hollywood studio track. Loved that. I suppose the first game i ever played though was on the old Amiga A1200 which was Sleepwalker. Fun game, used to play it for so long on weekends. Then i branched out to such games as Knights 242, Wonderdog, Trolls and my favorite, Star Trek 25th Anniversary which after 12 years i only just finished the game last month. The end was THAT hard! I mean, the Enterprise against the Enterprise 2 and two Elasi pirateships. I had no chance. But 12 years later, my skillz paid off.

The TRUE next-gen gaming is going to be on the PC with DX10.

Yes, those bunnies who make consoles must surely realise that this current 'gen' is going to be the last of its kind.

Next gen after this has to be something different, surely. Ken K carries on about the PS3 being a 'computer' - well, it doesnt have the upgradeability of a PC and that is a big drawback - plus it costs just as much as a computer, why not buy a computer then ??

Nintendo have broken the mold with innovations like the wiimote, but in a couple of years, its hardware may be starting to look a tad dated next to the HiDef of 360 and ps3... is that relevant though ? who knows how things will pan out...

Sony are going to be entering the PC market, as their CPUs will soon become comptetition for Intel and AMD. Does this mean sony's next gen are going to actually be computers and be upgradeable etc ??

I for one would love to see gaming devices become even more integrated into other multimedia stuff(like PCs have to some degree) eg. HDTV, Pay TV, 'Day and Date' Movies. Moreso, means of delivery of games and content will also continue to develop. This is already the case on PC, where you can download entire games upon purchase etc.

The Xbox and the 360 are already capable media center extenders, which is great for those who run xp/vista media center edition. An interface like windows MCE is great. Ive built several MCE 'towers' now for various friends and clients. People who want to have their entire digital audio/video collection accessible from a single source are increasingly using these setups. Depending on what type of setup you want, how much storage and the degree of backup redundancy you need, the prices can vary from a few hundred to the 1000s.

The next 2-3 years or so of 'next gen' PC gaming seems more clearer. Vista and its exclusive DirectX 10 hits the streets soon, and hardware manufacturers are clamouring to bring out vista compliant gear. eg. nvidia's awesome 8800 video card :) Add to this that PCs are about to hit quad core and that AMD/ATI are working on 'Fusion' chips(combined CPU and graphics processor!) the world of PCs and PC gaming is full of upwards growth.

Consoles are a different story...you can only make so many funky controllers before something has to give.

Time will tell....

In the meantime, heres to PC gaming.

*goes back to playing NWN2 on his PC*
