Information for New Players Part 1: Professions

Rogue15

Recommended Posts

Hi and Welcome to the Star Wars Galaxies General Discussion forum, I am Rogue15, and my IGN (in game name) is Kioet' Csuhen, and I play as a Trandoshan Bounty Hunter on the Starsider server.

Starting a brand new character was one of my most exciting moments in anything related to Star Wars, I knew it was going to be a fun game ever since I saw the concept, wallpapers, screenshots, then when I purchased it weeks before I got a computer that could run it. I won't go into details about the past professions that were in the game, because there were alot of varieties, but now there isn't as much, but there is still a nice range of skills and you can play the game however you want. Anybody can become a pilot so I won't get into that in this topic.

So I begin by listing the professions you will be able to play as, then go into a little more detail as to what you can do with those professions:

Entertainer

Domestic Goods Trader

Munitions Trader

Engineer

Structures

Jedi

Officer

Commando

Bounty Hunter

Smuggler

Medic

Spy

Entertainer

Entertainers are usually found in cantinas. As an Entertainer you get to Dance and Perform music to relax your clients and cure cloning sickness and give out a nice inspiration buff for 10% more experience points, galactic civil war points, or crafting experience points. You can also perform and dance with other Entertainers if you wish. Most entertainers can be found at the Mos Eisley cantina...I used to see them at the Dantooine Mining Outpost cantina, Theed cantina, and Coronet cantina, Mos Eisley is jam packed. Entertainers cannot go into combat except in Space as a pilot, as they cannot go past combat level 1 on ground. You can also set a covercharge price so people have to pay to watch you entertain, if you wish.

Domestic Goods Trader

Want to be Chef Boyardee, how about that grungy looking bartender? With this profession you can do that as well as be a tailor and make clothing for people to wear. The food and drinks are what's gonna sell the most though! What you have to do is harvest the ingredients for the thing you want to create, then put it together with a crafting kit. You may need to hire on a few guns to help bring in meat for the food, as you'll be a non combatant, still able to carry a weapon but at combat level 1, things may get tough. Once you're able to make some mandalorian wine, flameout, and other good food and drinks, you'll be turning a nice profit, and certainly there will be people asking for specific clothing for you to make, so gotta harvest some materials for it. :) The only main combat that Domestic Goods Trader can do is space combat.

Munitions Trader

Want to be a gunsmith? How about supply people with cool looking armor with nice energy/kinetic resists? How about crafting some scouttrooper armor for a platoon, or supplying them with grenades and thermal detonators? Or are you against the war, and would rather celebrate and provide people with fireworks? You can do that with this profession. :)

Once you are good at making armor and weapons, you should have a few customers asking for armor with certain stats, etc. Only main combat Munitions Trader can do is space.

Engineer

Want to build Droids? This is a really nice profession. Especially if you like droids in general, you can make them for a wide variety of things. There is the bounty hunter droids, they are the arakyd which helps locate planet a mark is currently at and the seeker droid, which updates the mark's waypoint directly to the bounty hunter. Droid Engineers can also make R2 units, Gonk Droids, and Medic droids, and droids that search for resources as well as droids that can be used to make repeated announcments and the droid engineer can also install detonation devices into the droid so players, especially bounty hunters, can send a droid right at a mark and then tell it to self destruct and blow a portion of their health off. :) Can't really do combat unless in space.

Structures

Want to build homes, decor, and stuff for cities? This profession will allow you to do that. From dining room chairs to guild halls and shuttle ports, this prof will let you do all that. No combat except in space.

Alright, on to the COMBATANT professions.....

Jedi

Want to wield the force and lightsaber? Jedi is the profession that lets you do just that. You start off with a training sword or pike, then later on when you level up more, you'll get to weild single and double bladed lightsabers, after you make them of course! You will also be wearing robes and get some nice force powers through expertise where you choose either Light Side and or Dark Side, but must make sacrifices to which points go where, as when you're cl90 you only have 45 total to spend. Dark Siders can dish out alot of damage, and Light Siders can take alot of damage. The different force powers are Force Run, Force Maelstrom (lightning), Force Grip, Saber Throw, Saber Block (blocks 80ish% of ranged attack), 10k heal with Damage over Time cure, and Force Cloak (which makes them invisible)

Some downsides of being a Jedi are the lack of ranged weapon specials and not being able to wear armor.

Officer

Wish to lead or support a group of people? Officer has some nice group buffs that can make the difference when it comes to taking control of a base, they also have an option in expertise to get an NPC pet to assist in fights, ability to call for supplies, which are usually some really nice stims that give enhancements to constitution, agility, or precision. Officers also are needed to take down opposing faction bases. They are the last profession needed for it, as they start the countdown for the base to blow up. It's always good to have an officer in your group.

Commando

Commandos are the main soldier on the battlefield. They have good offense and good defense as well. As a commando you have Area of Effect attacks, some nice Defensive buffs, and very good DoTs (damage over time specials). They can really put a hurt on you especially if they have alot of buffs and stims active, Commandos are SCARY, as they are able to damage several people with one shot, and if you're up 1vs1, you gotta run!!!!!! or you will DIE!!!!!! (well...depends really, they don't have melee attacks, but by the time you ever close range to melee them, you will be coughing up bacta at a cloning facility of your choice! Commandos are used to place charges on player placed faction bases.

Bounty Hunter

One of the coolest professions in the game, and yes, i'm a little biased. Been a bounty hunter since last year, I love it. As a Bounty Hunter, you get to take missions off of the Bounty Hunter terminals! From there, you will be contacted by a spynet operative, who gives you a biological signature. Now what am I to do with this? you ask...well, remember the Droid Engineer? You do a search on the bazaar terminal under 'search all vendors' and go to miscellaneous and go to factory crate, then go to Arakyd, and pick yourself up a few containers. Also look for Seeker Droids. You'll need those as well.

Once you have those, you go to an area outside of a city (unless it's a player city, or the Endor smuggler's outpost) and open your inventory, right click on the arakyd and select 'call arakyd' or 'call probe droid' forgot which it is. THEN you wait the 20 seconds, and when it lands (if u don't see it type /ar and it should target it) go to it and select the biosignature option, and wait til it tells you where your mark is at.

After that, you head to that planet, once on the planet, launch a seeker droid, these automatically track your target, if it's a player and the waypoint the arakyd gives, you may want to tell it to identify target and quickly launch another to search for it (id target will tell you the mark's name then it will stop reporting so ya wanna send 2 out, 1 to id and another to track) NPC missions are nice, you get decent money from them, and sometimes good loot, such as Bounty Hunter Armor Schematics, which you can have a munitions trader craft some armor for you with those....or you could turn around and sell them, the choice is yours. I will explain more about the player bounty system in another thread, but once you take a mission for a player mark, they will not know you are hunting them until you attack. (though some are quite good at sniffing bounty hunters out) One thing, don't be discouraged by 'hate tells' aka people complaining that you killed them while they weren't at the keyboard, or if they just cloned. That's their own fault, they got themselves on the terminals for killing someone of the opposite faction, you, the bounty hunter, should not have to waste your time waiting for THEM to get back to the keyboard to have less of a chance of getting some credits. One thing I suggest is if you win, just walk away, get another mission and ignore them if they start whining.

Smuggler

Want to smuggle contraband underneath the local authorities' nose? Join the smuggler profession, with this profession you will have the option to take on smuggling quests through underworld contacts, gain some underworld faction points, get some nice pistols, and get chased by Bounty Hunters (if you choose to, they'll be player bounty hunters) Smuggler has some good snares and there is a nice skill you can purchase and sell to other players called 'Inside Information'. With this skill, you can show a player if there is a bounty on their head, if someone is chasing them, and if a bounty hunter is chasing them, and how close they are. Unfortunately, the developers in their divine wisdom, decided against allowing smugglers to smuggle the addictive substance known to many as 'Spice' to other players, as it sortof promotes drug dealing and such and is 'unwholesome' to the game. There are quite a few snares that smugglers can use in fighting other players, as well as a snare breaker, good for escaping bounty hunters. Smugglers are used in base busting, as they slice the security terminal, allowing the medic to create a dna signature.

Medic

Want to keep your team alive and healthy on the battlefield? How about a little chemical warfare? Medics are a great support profession, as they can resurrect fallen comrades, give people stimshots, and raise the combat effectiveness of a group, aside from support, they can deal out some nasty DoT attacks, and they can even stop a Jedi in hit tracks, as well as render someone's heal near-useless with a bacta-corruption shot. They are also needed in base busting, as they have to slice a dna signature terminal so the officer can start the countdown.

Spy

One of the coolest professions I've played aside from Bounty Hunter, this profession lets you walk unseen through the enemy camp, then when you catch someone asleep, pop out and make them wish they hadn't let their guard down. The true assassin in the game, your main line of defense is stealth, the rest is pure damage, either melee 'cloak and dagger' or carbineer/sniper. They are tough to detect, and the more camo mods they have, the less likely they're able to be detected. When I played as a spy, i would act as recon and report enemy movement and pick off those that tried to retreat from the battle that would ensue.

That's it for the professions in galaxies! That is just an example of what each profession is.
