Any way to trace IP numbers in emails?

Does anyone know how to trace IP numbers in emails? I'm sick of my hotmail inbox been flooded with stupid emails from addresses that don't exsist, I have a good feeling I know who it is, but I can't proove it coz I need the ISP. So is there a programme or something that I can download to check the IP?

Also is anyone else getting stupid emails that flood your inbox?

Well if the addresses don't exist, the ip is most likely a spoofed one, so the ip will be different each time it's sent.

Anyway about your question.....my email client shows me the ip in the header of the email anyway, so you might wanna check your header etc biggrin.gif

In Hotmail, go to "Options," and then look for "Preferences."

Scroll down a little bit, and you should see a section for "Message Headers" under "Other Hotmail Options."

Change the setting to either "Full" or "Advanced." Then, when you view a message, you'll see exactly where it came from. The trick, however, is being able to decipher which one is the originating address. For help in this regard, try taking a look at http://www.spamcop.com/

Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

First off, your use of term is incorrect... ISP stands for Internet Service Provider, which is the company that gives you Internet access.

What you've provided us is the IP Address. IP stands for Internet Protocol, and the address is assigned to either individual servers, or to a proxy server. When your computer is connected to the Internet, it also becomes a server of sorts.

Anyway, with that out of the way, with the exception of the third one, the IPs you've provided all trace back to btinternet.com.

213.104.228.59 traces back to ntl.com.

And that means what? LOL I have no idea... so my ISP is optushome right? But my IP is 111.5.22.89 or whatever it is (that isn't my IP I just made that up to demonstrate) so some IP's change everytime you log in right? So it's possible it's the same person, but because the IP changes everytime I've got no way of prooving it? I've got cable so I know my IP stays the same all the time

Hi Natty!

Let's try to find the cowards and have their ISP to take care of them! smile.gif

62.7.2.249

62.7.74.240

213.122.236.146

They have been supplied by www.btinternet.com in England, GB.

Send the info re the abusive letters to

abuse@btinternet.com

213.104.228.59

Supplied by

www.ntlworld.com , Edinburgh Site.

Send info to

abuse@ntlworld.com

Send copies of the letters and their IP address and the date and time (GMT) to resp. ISP abuse address.

Also right click on the header for the letter and send a copy of the information provided there.

If they are using a modem, the IP address will change when they reconnect but that is no problem for the ISP to identify them if they also have the date/time and the header info.

It is not possible for us to track down to the last numbers. We can only find who has provided the address and send the complaint to the ISP.

If this is their first complaint they might only get a warning, otherwise (or if the abuse is repeated) they will be disconnected by their ISP!

Hopefully someone is reading this and is now Very Nervous! tongue.gif

Thanx for all the help guys, I don't know anything about tracing emails or IP numbers other than everyone has a diff number or something.

I think I know who it is (Try clues and hints forum tongue.gif) I'm willing to give an ultimatum, whoever this person is, has until the end of the weekend to admit that it was them, or I will send those IP's to the ISP companies concerned and let them know exactly what is going on, and believe me, I will do it too

I don't know how they looks like in your case but I suppose you can right click somewhere on the e-mail and get more info about it?

I myself have all my post transfered to Outlook Express and get the info there.

One click on the message in the list where it says From so the header turns blue.

Right click on the blue header and then click on the bottom choice (don't know what it is in English. The top says Open)

Select "Information" and you will find a line:

X-originating-IP:[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]

That's the one!

PS

The best program to use for finding the ISP for the address is:

http://www.amnesi.com/hostinfo/ipinfo.jhtml

I checked some other e-mails and my answer seems to be not 100% true.

Some Information doesn't have the X-originating info.

But you will find a line:

Recieved: from somename ([xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]) by ......

3 more IP addresses...

Those addresses only says that they belongs to hotmail.com.

You have probably not found the correct ones that should belong to the sender.

Check my PS in the other post re the www-address to find the sender.

OK, I'm convinced that the people who flooded my hotmail inbox are GuybrushStupidNumbers and Roving Gangster aka Raven Image or whatever his friggen name is

The proof is as follows...

RovingGangster signed my guestbook calling me a bit*h, so I decided to check out that IP addy and that traced back to NTL.com just like one of the IP's did that flooded my hotmail

I then proceeded to check the IP's of the emails I had from stupidnumbers and check those IP's out and they all traced back to btinternet.com Another piece of proof is that in some of the emails the CC is to thenetpenguin@aol.com

Some people may say it's hardly conclusive evidence, but considering what's happened they're definatly in it together and roving is probably that fag Bob__O too

Don't I make a great detective? biggrin.gif But thanx everyone else too, once I'm rich and famous I'll remember to give you say maybe $1000 because I'm so nice biggrin.gif

I would suggest that you guys NOT use Outlook Express for your e-mails... It is the most virus-prone e-mail client out there. Virtually all of the virus programs out there that propagate via e-mail goes through Outlook Express (especially the worms), and if people weren't using Outlook Express to receive those messages, most of those viruses cannot spread. Use Netscape's Messenger or something like Eudora, instead... You'll be safer that way.
