Flyn
1.Hit your Winkey + R. 2.Type in dxdiag. 3.Go to the display tab and disable directdraw and direct3d acceleration. Walla! (It worked for me, before I had both botched up graphics in everything but windows mode, and then movies would stutter. Now it works perfectly. ThunderPeel2001
Ummm... Doesn't that just turn on software mode?
Flyn
Well, for me software mode makes all 3d objects turned into lines skewed all over the screen. 3d acceleration, for me at least, equals no 3d objects. Maybe it some driver bug with the Geforce 8800 GTS
ThunderPeel2001
Software mode works fine for me and my 8800GTS... no so good for Direct3D mode though! It's weird that you have to go to those lengths to get the game to work. Maybe you should update your drivers?
Baja
Well, this is what my game looks like, and I'm running an 8800GTX. Hardware mode. Software mode.

ThunderPeel2001
yikes! well considering that software mode shouldn't be using the 3d bits of your gfx card at all, what os and processor are you guys running? I've no idea what could cause something like that in software mode...??
Baja
I'm using XP Pro, with SP2. My processor is a C2D 6700.
Grifter_Grifts
Probably overly-obvious here, but anything is worth trying. Run it under windows 95 compatibility mode Right click the process in task manager, set processor affinity to 1 I can't imagine these being the problem. Definitely looks like a GPU issue... See if it runs under OLDER video drivers. Alot of updates murder old games... But then, you have old drivers. Bleh.
baroughter
Well, this is what my game looks like, and I'm running an 8800GTX. Hardware mode. Software mode. i have the same problem as this person, i am running an 8800 GTS. The same problem with older drivers. When I disabled directdraw/direct3d I can successfully run in software mode. But it looks bad! is there a solution to running this game successfully with 3d acceleration?
baroughter
after some investigation, it seems turning of the 32-bit Z buffer has been a fix for direct3d problems in the past. problem is, i can't that option anywhere in rivatuner for my 8800. ThunderPeel2001
I wonder if altering all the settings in the NVidia control panel will change anything?
ThunderPeel2001
Has anyone discovered a way to make Grim work with 8800s yet?
MacBookPro
I have a 8600m, and I run through the same exact issue. Disabling dual cores does not work. Running in Compatibility mode does not work changing desktop resolution and color depth does not work.
MacBookPro
I'm afraid flyn is correct. Going into DXDIAG and disabling Direct Draw fixes these problems. It's not the same as running in software mode, as this fixes problems. Yay...time to play now!
