Mace MacLeod
If there's another thread for this buried down in the archives somewhere, my apologies. Sooooooooo, we begin the 07/08 campaign with the (rrrrrgh) Ducks as Stanley Cup Champions. Perhaps if they're lucky, baseball, football, basketball, golf, nascar racing and poker will all go on strike and someone in southern California will notice. Or wait...David Beckham is in town playing for the new LA soccer team, so its popularity will surely skyrocket! Or do I recall people saying the same thing about hockey when Gretzky went to the Kings about 16-17 years ago...? Homewards, my beloved Canucks suit up in new/old uniforms which were totally necessary and not just a cynical cash grab or anything, and have a few promising rookies in Mason Raymond, Ryan Shannon and Alex Edler making the team, with poor ol' Dan McGillis being released after trying to not look over the hill and totally expendable in camp. There's rumors that Markus Naslund has rediscovered his wrist shot, we still have the best goalie in the Western Conference, and maybe the Sedins will continue their breakout. Maybe. Stay healthy, guys. Secondary scoring is (still and always) a concern, but that's where the young guys are supposed to come in. Look for trade bait around about November if they tank. Good news for any Blackhawks fans, if there are still any left. Bill Wirtz has left the building in the most permanent way possible, so with any luck whoever he left the team to in his will might have some interest in actually building an NHL winner in Chicago. I reiterate, might. Bob Pulford is still GM. Finally, another year of living in hope that someone kills Gary Bettman so that the NHL can actually go back to being a sports league with its own history and vision rather that a soulless corporate entity that continues to embarrass itself by figuratively hopping up and down like a puppydog in heat trying to attract those elusive fans in the Southern US who Bettman lusts after to the exclusion of all other concerns. Oh, and Leafs and Habs fans? My team made the playoffs last year, and yours' didn't.
Commander Obi-Wan
Yes, finally. The new NHL season has started. I'm pumped. Like really pumped. Ya know, it's the time I can continue my success in the hockey pool. And I have my Oilers to cheer on. With a couple new acquisitions coming to our team, like Sheldon Souray and Dustin Penner, we have a better chance of winning this season than last season. We traded our captain, Jason Smith, and the bust, Joffrey Lupul. As well as some other players that really didn't fit here. And the Oilers probably overpaided to get Dustin Penner, hopefully, he'll be worth it. Sheldon Souray will definitely help our powerplay, though his +/- isn't exactly something that will benefit us, but I'm sure he can work on that. The Oilers also have a new captain, Ethan Moreau, which I think was the best choice from what we have on our team. So yeah, GO OILERS. Yes, I definitely agree with you concerning Bettman. He needs to be replaced. I don't think we need to try and fit a team in a city that could hardly care less. Maybe looking into a hockey market. You know like Canada. Best of luck to all the other teams... except Calgary and Toronto.
Prime
Dany Heatley just signed a 6 year deal here today with the Senators. I'm going to the Senators/Rangers game on Saturday.

Mace MacLeod
And the Oilers probably overpaid to get Dustin Penner, hopefully, he'll be worth it. Probably? I gotta level with you, man. Kevin Lowe doesn't light my fire as a GM in the slightest. If the Oil don't start showing improvement like real soon, look for him to hit the bricks. Commander Obi-Wan
Well, they have played one game, so far. And they certainly looked fine to me. Hemsky definitely looks improved. Now, that he is the legitimate player on our team (now that Smyth is gone), he seems, for the game, to know what his role is now. Gagner and Cogliano both looked pretty good in their rookie debuts. We'll have to wait to see how well they do. Souray was alright. Nice to see an extra edition on our powerplay. And Roloson was quite solid, with the exception of the Thornton goal. Penner wasn't noticeable, but it's only his first game and I think we can let him be until we've played at least 10 games to see if he is worth it or not. Mace MacLeod
A bit late, but wow was the last weekend not the highest peak of good luck for Edmonton teams vs Vancouver. Canucks sweep a home-and-home series with the Oil, who lose their high-falutin' free agent Souray to injury, and the Lions somehow managed to not out-suck the Eskimos in Mud Bowl '07. The Canucks may have gotten the snot slapped out of them by Philly, but at least we got to see the Sedins do to the Oilers what Gretzky and Kurri did to the Canucks throughout most of the 80's. Heh. Commander Obi-Wan
Sure, I'll give you that. Albeit, it's early in the season. So, there is always room for improvement. Though, unfortunately, the Oilers have lost Souray for about a month. So, that doesn't really help us the moment. Especially, with trying to create some chemistry on our mediocre powerplay. Hopefully, we can start scoring. The Oilers did win last night, and even if it was against a team that is worse than the Oilers, it's still a win, and that's all we need at the moment. And if we can beat the Flames tomorrow night, that will certainly help.
