A hypothetical question

You know how there are mods in development for Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy to recreate such classic Star Wars games as Dark Forces, the original Jedi Knight, Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith, and Shadows of the Empire? Well, I think it's safe to assume that Knights of the Old Republic III will utilize a newer, more advanced engine such as that of Mass Effect. (I was initially against the idea, as I stated in another thread here somewhere; but after seeing screen shots from Mass Effect -- which I've never played -- of the character customization as well as gameplay captures, I've since changed my stance on this matter.)

My question is, once KOTOR 3 is released, do you think any modding teams would get together to remake KOTORs 1 and 2 as total-conversion mods for the third game, with the latest graphics engine and mechanics? Would you like to see such a thing happen? How likely would it be that such a project would even be attempted? (We're not even necessarily talking completion here.)

Now, don't misunderstand the purpose of this thread: I'm not trying to call teams together to make such mods. All I'm asking is if you think this will happen, or even be attempted? Would you like to see it happen? Would you even possibly participate in such a project if you happen to be a modder yourself?

As for my personal thoughts on this matter, I would love to see this happen. And I'd love to see many mod ideas for the original versions of these games taken into account when remaking them, such as restoration work, technical fixes, the Weapons of the Old Republic mod, and many other reworkings.

Well you've listed 3 mods that will never be completed (Dark Forces mod was already canceled, and the other two will simply never be finished) so if you consider that, your question may be somewhat irrelevant.

In any case, the big difference between Jedi Academy and the KotOR games is that all the games in the JK series have been moddable right out of the box, with developer support. KotOR series has not been, so I don't see anything like that being possible (or at the least it won't be feasible). Plus a mod of that scale simple would never get finished, just like three your provided as examples. I don't want to sound like a pessimist... just a realist.

It is quite possible that people will attempt to revive the dark forces mod using the files that they released

Anyway I doubt that people would create a Kotor 1 and 2 conversion mod. Since if Kotor3 has a better engine people would rather recreate equipment from Kotor 1 and 2 (Like Revan's robes or Nihilus's mask) I doubt that people would try such a grand scale mod like Kotor 1 or 2 mod.

It could be quite likely that they would release developer tools just like they did for Jk3. Since Kotor has such a large modding community. (That is right now possibly larger then JK3).

Uh, yeah, that's one of the things I asked in my original post:

If the technology is sexy enough, why not? Of course, many of the models and textures will have to be similar to the ones in KotOR, or it would be one hell of a job. I'd love seeing a KotOR in post-Mass Effect technology. :) In fact, I was just thinking about this the other day!

But yeah, people will definitely try.

KOTOR has always been a highly 'mod-friendly' series with a still thriving community despite the lack of any official tools because of its foundation. The Odyssey Engine (used in KOTOR 1 & 2) is simply an updated version of the original Neverwinter Nights Aurora engine, which we all know was build mainly to allow players to create their own mods with its toolset.

Now, no one really knows if the Mass Effect engine is configurable because as far as I know, they havent released the tools to do such mainly because Mass Effect has only appeared on the Xbox 360. So far, most (if not all) the major mods for the KOTOR series has been for the PC versions due to the availability of tools and platforms that are simply lacking in the Xbox versions due to the fact that we users/players don't have access to the Xbox programming code (as far as I know but I'm hardly a programmer so I could be way off).

So a number of factors will determine if the mod community will thrive for a possible KOTOR 3. The number one factor is the graphics engine and easibility of developing for it. Now I know that someone in the community will find a way regardless (if it ends up on PC) but ambitious mods will only come if some tools are developed. And note that having a better graphics engine doesn't mean it will be easier or better to develop for as the lack of fanfare for modders on NWN2 as compared to the original NWN has shown.

My only hope is that whoever makes KOTOR3 convinces LucasArt that doing what Bioware did with NWN is the way to go with RPG games. It would be pretty sweet to be able to easily create custom campaigns and perhaps add multiplayer support this time around - the NWN1 online community was very grand and is still thriving (as far as I know), I'd really love to see this with a SW setting :)
