This may have been done before (I'm certain it will have been) but what is your favourite sport? Mine's football, but I also watch a lot of Rugby. PLay, too, on the odd occasion wink.gif

I'm not really into much sport but i try to play squash once a week. The only sports I watch is Wimbledon and boxing if there is a good match, but I only watch it when the big names are fighting, and then its annoying cos they are usually on at about 4 in the morning over here. Also its a rip off cos you have to pay 12-15 quid to watch it on Box Office Digital or whatever its called.

Does playing cricket in the driveway count? And footy in the street count? (and by foorty, I mean the only type of footy... AFL) biggrin.gif Actually I love footy n cricket, fishing is ok too, but I almost always thow them back, they look so innocent, so I just do what Rex Hunt does (he's a commentator and huge fishing fan with his own show) he kisses the fishy and throws them back in the water

Tennis is ok if you're playing it, I can't stand watching it, coz it goes on for aaaaaages

Oh, yeah, I forgot Badminton. I play a bit of that too...I came fourth in a competition for my school year, but only got beaten by the guy who won the tournament and the person who got 3rd place.

Americans are stupid, they invent crappy words for stuff that already has a name. Examples:

Sidewalk - Pavement

Eatery - Restaurant

Flashlight - Torch

Diaper - Nappy

Pacifier - Dummy

Plus they decide to take the name 'football' from the British, even though American Football consists mainly of guys in big padding and helmets (wusses) running with the ball. They also decide to rename Football to soccer becuase they can't be bothered to come up for a name for their own sport (which they stole from rugby, but added easier rules and safety gear)

BTW My favourite sports are skateboarding, football and basketball

Eatery? Who came up with that catastrophe of a word? I've only seen one eatery in my 17 years in the United States. Trust me, we use restaurant 99.9% of the time. And come on, nappy and dummy were stupid words anyways, we had to change them. Besides, pacifier is an awesome word for something you put in a baby's mouth, which translates down to "peace maker". But you're right, the rest of the words are stupid American ones. Especially the whole football mess. I try to continually use the word football when I talk about soccer, it makes me sound more intellectual. smile.gif

And my favorite sports would have to be: football, American football, baseball, basketball and ultimate frisbee! Oh yes, and runnning and cycling, if those count (which they should).

Agreed. I have never, not even once in my life, heard anyone in my vicinity say, "I'm hungry, let's go to the eatery."

Usually we use the word restaruant. Sometimes we'll say take-out, because we'll be ordering to-go.

And come on, nappy and dummy were stupid words anyways, we had to change them.

Nappy sounds like you're feeling tired, and would like to take a nap...

Besides, pacifier is an awesome word for something you put in a baby's mouth, which translates down to "peace maker".

Gotta agree on the pacifier issue here. The whole point of it is to stop a toddler from screaming and kicking, wanting something to suck on. Stick a pacifier in the toddler's mouth, and guess what? The toddler has been pacified. Makes sense to me. How does "dummy" make more sense?

But you're right, the rest of the words are stupid American ones.

I also think that "sidewalk" makes somewhat more sense than "pavement." I mean, come on, it's on the side of the street for people to walk on. Yeah, sure, it's paved, but there are plenty of other things that are also paved... what do you call those?

Especially the whole football mess. I try to continually use the word football when I talk about soccer, it makes me sound more intellectual. smile.gif

Yeah, football is one of the weird ones... Look at American football--what do you use the feet for? Running. So do all of the other sports, why aren't those called "football"? They rarely handle the ball with their feet in American football.

I'm sure there are plenty of American terms that doesn't really make sense, where their English equivalents would make much more sense, but I think the ones that Murta picked didn't happen to be among them...

Except maybe "flashlight"... I could go either way with that one, but we consider torches large sticks with flames on one end, so another name was "created" to distinguish between a battery powered light and a large stick with fire and smoke. Do you use the same term for both objects? Or do you have some other term for what we call torch?
