It is gained all at once.

Kinda sucks :[. Playing the way I want to play, I never really get too extreme light side. More of a neutral-light. I did get it once though.

 

What do you get for pure dark side?

Get a bonus in a different attribute than lightside. Councilors get 50 bonus force points if I recall.

 

I hated the force scale because it was so difficult to gain LS points, but minor evil acts always detract huge sums of points. And once a mastery is achieved, more LS acts go wasted. I think the scale in TSL was much more achievable. Acts in the original were just not enough to matter much.
