Monkey Island SE: How do I stop the speech abruptly?

I do not need to hear characters speaking the entire dialog when it is written on the screen. How do I stop their speech so I can move on if I want to? The only way I know to do it right now is to switch to the old version of the game then hit the period key, which cancels it. Is there no way to do this in the regular game?

Well, yes, but when there's no text you can read ahead you can actually focus on listening to the beautiful voice acting, one of the things the special edition is all about, and you would get rid of the need to stop them from talking in the fist place, wouldn't you...

I don't want to listen to the beautiful voice acting. I want to play the game. I don't want to listen to someone speak what I finished reading 15 seconds ago. This is the only game I've played in the last 10 years that doesn't have an option to cancel the dialog whenever you want. Ridiculous.

You can do it because I was doing it while I was playing. I can't remember how, though. Try RIGHT CLICK, SPACE, ESC, BACKSPACE, and RETURN.

I think you might have been playing another game. You definitely can't do it unless you switch to the old version. I tried every single key.

Backspace works SOMETIMES. I can interrupt Guybrush when he reads the memos, but not when he reads Stan's business card, for example. It seems pretty random.

edit: the difference is probably that looking at the memos triggers a cutscene. Guybrush plays an animation and you can't move. Then again, I can't skip dialogue with Herman...
