Kotor 2 crashing.

Necessary Evil

Recommended Posts

So I recently installed TSL on my Windows XP computer. I made sure all antivirus was off before I installed it I will launch into the game, be able to create a character, but when I hit play, the game crashes and I get an error message that says the cause of the crash was was swkotor.exe.

I'm not really sure what this means, can someone help me try to solve this problem? I tried rolling back drivers because I heard that newer drivers can cause problems with TSL, but when I try reverting to a previous driver like 77.77 or 78.01 it says my hardware is incompatible when it goes to install the drivers. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS if that's any help.

EDIT: when i scanned hardware it came up with an error that said my video drivers weren't up to date...which makes no sense because I have the latest drivers for my card.

Also, I have played this game many times before and it worked perfectly...the last time I played it was like 6 months ago i think. I guess it just now decided to **** with me.

Uhh, it also showed my OS as red, but when I played it before it checked out green. I haven't made any changes in my OS since. The ****?

Please use the game's configuration utility to post your system specs and we can go from there:

Post your system specs

Sometimes we're just not going to be able to help you if we don't know what kind of hardware you have on your machine. If you don't know what you have on your machine, then follow these steps below:

  • Bring up the launcher menu for Kotor 1 or 2.
  • Click on "Configure".
  • Click the "Scan Hardware" button on the lower center of the window.
  • Click "Yes" to continue.
  • Click "Details" to view your system specs.
  • Click "Save Report" and save the file to your desktop.
  • Whenever you post your problem, open the file you just saved and copy and paste the contents to your post.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, your video card driver status is FAIL, so there's definitely something wrong with your driver installation. This is weird, because I can confirm that KotOR2 works fine on my XP machine that has very similar hardware to yours (P4; 6800GT) and also has the newest nVidia drivers installed.

What I would do is download the latest driver version from nVidia, but before installing them download and install the latest version of CCleaner from wherever it's available and Driver Sweeper from Guru3D, then uninstall your current drivers using Control Panel>Add and Remove Programs. When prompted to restart, decline and remove any other nVidia software that is still present on the Add/Remove list, and then run CCleaner's registry cleaner. Then reboot into Safe Mode, log into the Administrator account and run Driver Sweeper. Have it check for nVidia display driver files and clean them all, then reboot when prompted, but reboot back into Safe Mode/Admin account and run Driver Sweeper again to check and see if it missed anything. If it did, go to the file's location and delete it manually, then empty the recycle bin and reboot, this time into normal mode. Then install the new drivers as you would normally do.

If you're still having trouble, then try uninstalling the game, running CCleaner's registry cleaner, rebooting and reinstalling the game.
