Darth Avlectus
Though about this project, that project. Now I think about a new machine. I'm just wondering, what are your thoughts on such a mobo? I figure if I'm going to make a new computer, it should be with some kind of basis that will be badass and last for quite some time. I'm aware the previous versions were good, yes. As technology progresses and gets better prices will come down. I'm okay with spending a fair chunk in the beginning on the core basis of my machine (mobo, processor, and tower). Probably won't be running it anywhere near its max capabilities for quite some time either. I'm not going to start out with "1337" everything. Though as time goes on I'll get better stuff. While I won't be at the cutting edge, but I'll benefit from OC experimenters' success and have downloadable upgrades for that. Yes I happen to have some experience in liquid cooling systems, albeit not for computers specifically but similar stuff that gets HOT (lasers and power supplies) and I am fully well aware of things that can and do go wrong associated with liquids being around electronics. And yes, I do plan on getting an o-scope and netbook for diagnostics tools (bit of a prerequisite). Anyone here ever played with such a system or similar? Q
IMO, it's never worth it to spend $500 on a motherboard. This is the motherboard in my rig, and, even with the cost of my X-Fi thrown in, it was less than half what that ASUS is, and with almost as many features. I won't miss the ones it doesn't have. At this point, you really should be looking at Sandy Bridge and Z68, however. X58 is obsolete. Its true replacement is due to come out any time now, and it's going to be expensive as hell. Darth Avlectus
Okay, you've got my attention. That additional bios backup or "flashback" is something I'm keen on and I see a wide selection. I'll need to compare them side by side to see all the features and stuff. Was not aware Maximus IV was out yet, and also I was wondering about Z68. I know intel has more stable processors, but there are some others out there with wider, aherm, "performance" ranges? What of that? Also, what are some recommendations for towers? Anything with some room and namely designed with thermodynamics in mind? I know a bit of assembly retrofitting to match up custom fans (I prefer comair rotron, since they have CFM ratings in the 200-300 range, and especially NOS from surplus outfits since it is possible to pay $25 for a fan that was originally $75-100). Q
Regarding cases, I recommend a case that has provision for a top-mounted fan. Heat rises, and a blowhole fan is the best way to get rid of it. As for the other case fans, they don't need to move a lot of air on an individual basis; the case should simply accommodate several of them. A large number of slow-turning fans is quite a bit quieter than a small number of high-speeds ones. I use an Antec Nine Hundred. It is well-made has terrific airflow and was reasonably-priced at the time, but cable management is a nightmare and dust-proofing the case required a very time-consuming and labor-intensive mod, so I would recommend the improved Nine Hundred Two, which has improved cable management and built-in dust filters. EDIT: The cheapest I've seen the Nine Hundred Two is $80 (making it a bargain), and, if the gaudy blue LEDs bug you (as they did me), you can cut the wires to them (as I did). Darth Avlectus
Hmm. Nice. Unfortunately mid size form factor isn't quite big enough. Thanks anyways. I'm usually function over form. The "prettiest" I'm looking into is Bit Fenix. Black and venom green led, black case and red led...or white case and blue led. Corsair was another one. Yeah, I usually like to splice the LEDs and have an on/off switch. You're talking to someone who has a crap ton of LEDs with different shades of colors for hobby projects. I have most every optical color out there. I figure I'm going to need room for some fairly serious s#*% (though perhaps not elite of the elite), and even if not for some serious s#*%, I'd like something I can keep around awhile that won't become obsolete in a few years. Like I could toss out the motherboard and everything else but keep the case for the next one. My mother always said I like getting the most use out of things. I refuse to throw out clothes until they are tattered rags practically falling off. So umm, yeah. As to the rest, I must have derp'd hard on the processors, and such.
