of course their not handrawn, the program they used for everyting is called "scumm" thats why they called the scumm bar "scummbar" and now theyre using a program called "lua" so now its called the"lua bar"

Monkey Island game engine is Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion(SCUMM). I mean what program they used for graphics?

im not sure about the monkey 1 graphics but the backgrounds for monkey 2 were all watercolours which were scanned in, thus the highly detailed backgrounds.

"El nombre de Guybrush proviene de los archivos gráficos del programa Dpaint con que se realizó el juego, llamados "brush" (pincel). El archivo del protagonista, puesto que no había sido bautizado todavía, era genéricamente llamado "guy" (chico). Así, sus archivos gráficos recibían el nombre de "guy brush", origen de su nombre definitivo. "Threepwood" fue decidido por todo el equipo de programación."

I don't know Spanish TOO well, but I can make out that this story explains where Guybrush' name comes from (already knew that), AND it mentions the program Dpaint. So I guess they used that.

Geez, I thought everyone knew that - yes they were drawn pixel for pixel in DELUXE PAINT (it must have been hell!)
