Mara Jade previous backstory?

I just started listening to the audible version of the thrawn trilogy, and it seems Mara Jades character has been established already. I'm only in chapter 9, but she seems to really hate luke and really hate the empire.

 

Was she already introduced in a previous book/series? Or are we supposed to learn about her shadowy past over the course of the series?

She was introduced in the Thrawn trilogy, like many commonplace elements of the EU. However, there are a few earlier chronological appearances as well.
