"The original design for Monkey Island had the central character suffering from amnesia, so he didn't know his name. I dropped this story element, but then had to come up with a name. Steve Purcell (the guy who invented Sam and Max) was drawing characters for me to look at. He was doing the editing in DPaint, and when you pick up an object, they call it a 'brush'. Since we didn't have have a name, we were just calling him 'the guy'. Steve kept saving his brush files as 'guybrush.lbm'. It kind of stuck."
