Saber Control (Try and get this to RAVEN if you can)

I have a suggestion: In Obi-Wan (the game, not the person), it was said that the lightsaber would be controlled by the user. You would just hold a button, and the lightsaber would move.

Unfortunetly, Obi-Wan is dead.

So, why don't RAVEN put this feature in JK2?

Who here agrees that it would be A LOT cooler than just clicking randomly.

The only thing automatic should be blocking laser blasts with the lightsaber. Hexen II would've been really boring if the paladin's sword wasn't controllable, same with Heretic II and the blade.

Yes, you are "able to control the saber based on the player movement" as in JK, but I guess saber moves will look a lot smoother this time around, because they used motion capture. And I'm sure Raven will fine tune those animations even after that.

i think having it like JK1 will be fine as long as there isnt one single secondary swing that inflicts three times the damage. if they do include that huge secondary swing again, you'll have ppl hopping around like monkies only pushing three buttons...like jk1

The Obi-Wan control method sounded very cool and refreshing at first, but sadly the idea was pretty ineffective. You would become too pre-occupied with moving the saber, rather than moving your character.

I'd rather they stick with the JK / Rune way.

nope

As simpson says it was ineffective

It worked just like B&W gestures system, after you drew a pattern(while you couldnt use your mouse to look and move?) the move was executed

This glyph system was one of the things that moved OW away from the PC. Simon Jeffery (LEC president) said the game was not fun to play

Thats why they must be extremely careful with the design of the saber system now

Don't worry, Cartman's Dad...I've welcomed you in another thread. ;)

This has been discussed (briefly) in another thread. The problem with such a system is mouselooking, strafing and swinging the saber in the direction of your choosing...at the same time.

My suggested remedy for this was for someone to make a mouse with a trackball instead of a wheel, so you could still mouselook with the mouse, use the trackball for directional swings, and use the keyboard for strafing.

And guess what...I've just seen such a mouse advertised in Computer Shopper magazine issue 167. It's called the 4D MagicMotion Mouse from Vivanco. They say the ball is useful for 4-directional scrolling...*** that...I reckon with some tweaking it could be made to work as a real-time saber/sword control.

So, I'm wondering if Raven could maybe acquire one of these devices...and see if it is possible. :D Even if it's too late for JKII...maybe JKIII? LEC? Hmmmm...??

Anyway, I reckon the possibility is there...for any game that requires the use of a melee weapon.

Incidentally, there is now also a mouse with a PowerPad...a four-directional scroll device...from Tekdata. I wonder if that would do a similar job?

At least it looks like the hardware is moving in the right direction...and if someone, somewhere, could set up something in-game to test it out, it could lead to some fundamental changes not only in the way we play games, but in the way they are developed. ;)

It'll definatly be more movement based. They'll also probably allow many more combinations depending on your speed, situation of your saber, etc. Also, the poly-to-poly collisions on the sabers should make it much better. Blocking will probably be done by swinging, and when your saber hits the other guys saber they cancel into a block. Imagine doing the 25 moves they said they'd have, plus motion capture plus this. It's simple, easy, but still intense. I'd say it's perfect.
