CaptainRAVE Posted October 30, 2001 Share Posted October 30, 2001 A test of AMD processors showed that those using the most current Palomino core are likely to quickly overheat if their heat sinks are removed, even when using the latest motherboards. Although of course, processors should be run with heat sinks intact, it is important that the chip can survive a faulty fan for a short time. AMD and motherboard maker Fujitsu-Siemens both protested the findings, but were unable to prove them wrong. However, AMD has developed guidelines for future released which should take care of this major flaw. Future chips will shut down when they become too hot, saving motherboards but potentially losing data as the computer session is abruptly terminated. Athlons, T-Birds, and prolly Durons fry in a matter of seconds, if that, without a heatsink. Although I read somewhere that these cut energy usage down 20% or some such, therefore not needing as much cooling.
