WD_ToRMeNt
Jedi Knight 2, Unreal 2, Unreal Tournament 2, Doom 3, Quake 4, RtCW, Soldier of Foturune 2, and lets toss in the Ghost Recon missin pack. 02 is going to be a killer (heh litteraly) year for FPSs. JK2 might be hard pressed to win serious awards.
SlowbieOne
I think the fact that it's the first "sword-fighting" game ever alone would be enough to win G.O.T.Y. It could turn out to be VERY revolutionary. Although I am looking forward to all of those too...there's just no way in my mind, especially after what I have seen recently, that JK2 won't make the top of my list. As long as it has the gameplay to back it up (I'm not worried).

SlowbieOne
I haven't forgot. I preordered it at EB, and have been anticipating it for quite some time. I have the SP demo, and although it does look good and play well, it just doesn't have that "solid" feel to the engine like SoF, Q3, or UT. SoF was one of the most solid FPS games I have ever played, which is another reason why I think JK2 will kick ass. Raven knows how to use an engine to its potential, and unfortunately, not all companies can reach that level of expertise. BTW I have 2 killer comps. 866 P3 256MB RAM GeForce2 GTS 1.6 P4 512 MB RAM GeForce 3 Ti200 Don't get me wrong, Medal of Honor demo runs superb on my P4, but again, just doesn't have the solid feel to it. Am I alone on this?
WD_ToRMeNt
But you see, in order for it to be something exceptional, something great, it'll have to be more then quake 3 with a light saber. I wish they'd understand what really made JK MP almost entirely differant then Q2 or UR. Not having map+seeing robs it of an entire dimension, so will levels that are more or less quake 3 maps not designed with speed + jump and lots of tricks in mind. Ive read the info on the new forcing lightning and it's a bit like grip was in JK, but will it be enough...
Darth_Lando
I don't think Doom 3 is going to be out until 2003 am I right? U2 may be this years sweeper (if it comes out on time) if they can make the game play as awe-inspiring as the graphics. Have you seen the video on this game? Absolutly mad. I am watching this game with much interest. As far as Jk2 I am hoping for the best (and have high expectations mind you). We shall soon see. Emon1
SoF II, Doom III, Doom IV, Unreal Tournament II, Unreal II, all don't come out till 2003. Besides, JK2 is STAR WARS. STAR FRICKIN' WARS! Everyone loves Star Wars, especially the geek reviewers that choose G.O.T.Y. for magazines like CGW or PC Gamer.
Mafia_Jabba
9 times out of 10 none of those games are releasing this year.
WD_ToRMeNt
Actually Unreal2 is due out roughly the same time as JK2 and UT2 has been in the works for a year and may be out as early as this summer. Quake 4 is also due mid-late 02.
Damazig
Dont care what new games r coming, Im gonna buy a few of them, but JK2 will be the ultimate badass!!
Denise
Not having map+seeing robs it of an entire dimension I don't really see how. The "dimension" you speak of (player tracking and powerup denial) is still there, just lacking the handy-dandy visual aid for those who need it. If they do things right it should be interesting to see who can cast off the crutch and who can't.
StormHammer
Here's a slightly longer list of PC titles that are currently slated for release this year... FPS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast Soldier Of Fortune 2: Double Helix Unreal II Medal Of Honour: Allied Assault Serious Sam 2 (well, I had to include it, didn't I? It's just too much gibbing fun...) Duke Nukem Forever (if not this year, they really shouldn't bother at all) C and C: Renegade (hmmm...) Counterstrike: Condition Zero Halo (a long shot...but certainly possible) Kreed (starting to look like strong competition for Unreal II in the graphics department) Maelstrom (another Unreal engine title) New World Order (MP-biased...but some realy nice graphics) Chaser Bounty Hunter Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza Half-Life 2 (if you believe the rumours ) Internal Pain (don't know much about it...but the graphics are very good) Iron Storm Wanted: Dead Or Alive (a Western...ooooh...) Call Of Cthulhu Unreal Tournament II (if it's as addictive as the first one, it will be huge) RPG Deus Ex 2 (an outsider for this year, IMHO) Morrowind Arx Fatalis Knights Of The Old Republic (maybe...just maybe...) SW: Galaxies (not for me...but it's supposed to arrive this year) Outcast 2 (looks very, very good...supposed to be this year) Dungeon Siege Neverwinter Nights And those are just some of the games on my Wanted list... I'd be very surprised to see Doom III this year...but you should keep in mind that no release date has been given for it...nor for Quake IV. Unreal Warfare will definitely be 2003...it was mentioned in passing by a dev in an interview. I think Thief III will probably be 2003 as well. The crux of it is...ToRMeNt is absolutely right. JKII has a lot of competition this year, from a lot of anticipated titles. Some are certainly better looking, and some promise fantastic gameplay. Nothing is set in stone, and any one of these could be a sleeper hit that rocks the boat. It will be very interesting to see which are the successes, and which the failures from this bunch... Denise
He's right in some ways; there's a lot out there to be competing against, and the relative strengths of the various games could certainly have an impact on the size of the MP community. Something to be concerned about, sure, yes, all well and good. But from a strictly sales standpoint, though... It's Star Wars. Industry juggernaut. It has no particularly threatening "competition". It's a guaranteed success even if the game itself stinks to high heaven. I shudder to think at the number of people who would have preordered the instant they heard of the title, if they could have. No cause for worry in that particular arena.
StormHammer
Ah...you got me. I pre-ordered... ...but I did so based on the strength of the screenshots, early gameplay video footage, information and a bit of faith. Then again, I've done the same with SOFII...and probably will with Unreal II...
Fruitloop
My bets are on Unreal 2 or Nuke Dukem Forever (if I see it in my lifetime) taking the GOTY or ActionGOTY award. Jedi Knight Outcast just doesn't seem to have the needed spark to be something absolutely innovative based on what little in-depth, gameplay specific information Raven has released (and I've heard it all). But does that mean I think it won't be a good game? Not a chance.
Poopypants
I'm sorry folks, but Duke Forever is starting to look like Superman for the 64 to me. Love waits a long long long long time, but my patience wears thin with development that even the developers can't get behind. I don't know much about it, don't think I've even seen screenies, but I know that it's slower than molasses in a Frigidaire. I waited that long for Superman. Who-boy did my fanboy [censored] wait. And to what avail? None. Upon renting, I felt like I was playing through the designer's ink-pen notes scribbled on a crumpled-up bar napkin. EMPHASIS ON THE BAR! JKii will likely get my own personal G.O.T.Y. RTCW was brilliant, but at the same time cliché from the opening cutscene (which was cool, but ya know, lame at the same time). Medal of Honor might catch me, I'm sorry I love to shoot Nazis (which I am not ). Unreal 2 will [censored] me off because its not UT2 which will [censored] me off because I'll want the story of Unreal 2. Half-Life 2 (wishful thinking) could wipe my butt and hand it to me, granted, but I really don't believe the rumors, it would be hard to come up with a great storyline that hasn't already been done by any 12-year-old mod developer, and with what engine? Star Wars, folks... Star Wars. Gameplay/control and such, in my heart, will be hard to truly beat Half-Life. The modified Quake2 engine still dangles my heart over the gaping maw of Q3, what can I say. But Star Wars, folks, Star Wars. Emon1's got it in the bag, I think. We're all SW nerds. We're posting on the bulletin boards for crying out loud, just to make up for the lack of the new game to play. Most of what we type on here could be classified as fan fiction because we hardly know ANYTHING yet! ::frustration growing... out... of... control:: BRAAAAAR! POOPYHULK MAD! POOPYHULK WANT PLAYABLE DEMO! POOPYHULK SEEK SYMPATHY FROM RAVEN DEVELOPERS AND LUCASARTS FOR POOPYHULK's CONTINUAL PATRONSHIP, DESPITE CRAPPY TIME PERIOD FROM ROGUE SQUADRON TO BATTLE FOR NABOO. Outlaw
Wow...thats quite a list. I didn't realize that many good fps were comming to the PC withen the next year or two. Most of those games will be great. Jedi Outcast is the #1 game on my list and its going to be one of the earlier games released. It does not get much better than this. If anyone needs to upgrade there PC, now is the time to do it. As far as Medal of Honor is concerned. I also played the single player level and the graphics could have been a little more polished. But, that one level was huge and the combat was some of the most realistic I've seen in a long time. You actually feel like your fighting real soldiers who could kill you at any moment! I just spoke to somebody the other day who obtained the full version of the game because he is part of the game industry. He said the game was amazing and quite addicting to play.
