JK, 'PC' ObiWan, Cutscenes and Secrets

OK ... so it's a lot of stuff ...

First - since I finished RtCW, then went back and completed Elite Force (I put it aside when I got CastWolf for Christmas) ... I am playing through JK again. It continues to be such a fun game ... I understand the JKII levels aren't supposed to be quite as long ... oh well, I'm sure I won't be disappointed! Also, I come from the old 'arrow key - ctrl - z' control set, and have just recently gotten into using the 'WASD - mouse' combination. It really allows so much more control! However, two things have come up as I've played JK: first, I'm using my Dell laptop, with the trackpad, and 'mouse2' is a pain to get to, which I assigned to 'Fire2'. Speaking of Fire2, it is only when I started playing with the lightsaber (again, after finishing RtCW and EF and the first levels of JK) that I noticed that. It will be interesting to see how this works with JK2.

Also, anyone remember the PC version of ObiWan LEC was working on? I was cleaning out a PC (getting work done on the house, need to empty a couple of rooms) and found the 'gameplay preview' video again. It is very interesting to look at it now, as we see more and more from JK2. It (the ObiWan clip) looked really good back then, and the 'fully rendered' parts still look nice (see below). However, the saber and blast shots now look weak (OK, it was supposed to be an early preview), but watching ObiWan move around looks more like a console game than a FPS ... or maybe just too much like EP1:TPM with better graphics and control ... anyway, I pull some positives from seeing that, but my disappointment has now ebbed and has been replaced with the greater excitement that we are getting an updated JK!

OK ... I know we've discussed the cutscenes *ad nauseum*, but based on the ObiWan video, paired with Elite Force and RtCW ... I am actually quite enthusiastic about non-video cuts. Since they have said they will be combining the 'game engine' scenes with 'fully rendered' scenes, this should be a nice pairing ... I have high expectations.

Finally ... I'm sure there will be 'secrets' in the SP game, but does anyone have any thoughts if they will be like in many games (nice to have extras) as opposed to JK (bonus force stars awarded)? I know JK2 is not based on the same manual star system, but any thoughts of how the 'secrets' will play into things?

... one final thought - I learned stealth and mouse control for RtCW, so what will I do for JK2 ... :-)

Things keep looking better and better ...

Mike

It has been said couple of times that we can play JK2 through either guns blazing(saber swinging in my case) or using stealth. I just recently tried both RtCW and MoHAA SP demos, and especially the latter one turned out to be heavily quasi-stealth based, if I may say so, because I died easily if I tried to run firing into that little village full of snipers, machine gun nests and soldiers with hand grenades and fingers ready on trigger. I don't think JK2 will be that realistic, because it's still more tradional FPS with a twist or two, but stealth demanding missions certainly bring a lot of variety into gameplay and make it more exciting when trying to avoid detection. It will also take you much longer to finish those levels, because you have to stay away from rooms full of enemies and take alternative, longer route to your destination. What comes to cutscenes, I believe Raven will use same arrangement as in EF: in-engine cutscenes will start and end missions in addition to moving story along, while fully rendered cutscenes generally introduce game to us and visualize space scenes(I haven't found anything about Creat® studios, but if EF is any indication, animation quality will be excellent). :)

I like games that incorporate stealth as well as brute force, it lends a nice alterantive when you get outnumbered, or you don't have much ammo.

Metal gear Solid 2 is a good example of combining stealth and action. (Ok, so its a PS2 title, and its in a totally different universe, but its a damn good game) Learned alot on evasion from it. I prefer the fighting route myself, but not with guns. I figure if I can evade a couple of blaster shots, hopefully sending them back to their attacker, and hopefully getting in range to chop them in half.

Im a big fan of swords, and the lightsaber is my holy grail ;)

yeah, lightsabers are the way to go. When i heard that it is realisticly possible to play JK2 using only the saber, i was like "****in A, ****in A". And i also prefer the combat to the sneaking around, but having the choice will make the game a whole lot more interesting.

I hope there is going to be a WAR3 MOD for JK2...so you can take out your anger on stormtroopers :)

For those of you who don't know what WAR3 MOD is, it's basically a mod that modified the firing rate of weapons. Repeater fires concussion rifle bullets, drops Sequencer super fast...etc
