Jedi Knotes #5!

Jedi Knotes #5 - January 24, 2002

Producing the audio for Star Wars® Jedi Knight®II: Jedi Outcast™ (both Star Wars sound effects and interactive John Williams score) brings back fond memories of our years working in the LucasArts Sound Department. Having worked on Star Wars®: Dark Forces®, Star Wars® Jedi Knight®: Dark Forces®II and Star Wars®: Jedi Knight®: Mysteries of the Sith®, we wanted to maintain the approach that worked so well in those games while at the same time taking advantage of some of the newer audio technologies available to us in the Jedi Outcast game engine. One of the first things you will notice is the high fidelity of the voice, music and sound in the game. Higher data rates and MP3 technology allowed us to approach a film-quality soundtrack for this title. Drawing from the wealth of Skywalker Sound's Star Wars sound effects collection as well as designing custom effects, the vehicles, weapons and locations will come to life as never before.

Musically, Clint Bajakian (who produced music and sound for Star Wars: Dark Forces as well as many other Star Wars titles) has designed an interactive score, adapting John Williams' monumental film score to an interactive medium that dynamically responds to the player's situation. Refreshingly, many musical themes and sections are included that have had seldom, if any treatment in previous Star Wars games.

We all know most of this, but nevertheless, a new Jedi Knotes is always exciting.

The dynamic sound system is going to be very cool. Imagine yourself wandering cautiously down a corridor, and suddenly, laser bolts blast past you and the music switches to a fast tempo as you engage your saber and take apart a group of stormtroopers.

New sounds for weapons all and anon?! About TIME! I'm afraid we might be getting some new sounds for the dreaded GONK droid. Improved sound effects for guns will be great. Grainy sounds form JK weapons always annoyed me on my -- admittedly -- crappy system.

Actually, it looks like LEC is doing the sound part for JK2. Both Clint Bajakian and Julian Kwasneski have worked for LEC quite some time: Clint has composed music for such games as Tie Fighter, Dark Forces, MI2 & 4, Infernal Machine, Outlaws etc. and Julian has been sound designer(often with Clint) in such games as Grim Fandango, MI3 and Outlaws(he has also been assistant voice director in The Dig). Fear not, my friend, they know very well what they are doing. :)

No, but the music was very good and kept the pace going. The music was always very well suited to the environment......creepy for a haunted ship, fast paced when under attack etc....but it wasnt like the dynamic system of JK2.....the music was just programmed to come on in certain points of the game whatever was happening in the surrounding environment.

I must admit. When I read your post I was honestly shocked. I can't imagine making a JK sequel w/out part of the original score. :shudder:
