Ham Yoyo
Here are some prices at Newegg.com. What do you think? Are the things I picked compatible? Are there any other places where I can get a better buy out of these items? I do not want to an AMD because I want a Pentium 4 and have had good luck with Pentium. This adds up to $363 plus shipping. I haven't ordered yet. Thanks for your input. Roger
You say you don't want AMD because of good luck with Pentiums? Well, let me show you something: MSI K7T266 PRO2 Motherboard: $97.00 KINGSTON KVR266X64C25/256 256MB 32x64 PC2100 DDR RAM $70 AMD 1700+/266 FSB Athlon XP PROCESSOR CPU- OEM $117 Total: $284 plus shipping (on new-egg) This configuration will beat the Pentium configuration on most applications (inluding Jedi Knight II ) If you want to spend the same amount as you were going to spend on the pentium config, buy a Athlon XP 1900+ (woohoo) which is superfast! Don't believe me? Do your research online and convince me otherwise... Oh and you don't have to worry about socket compatibility like with the pentiums. This motherboard will last at least 2 or 3 years. The next Pentium probably has a different socket, and then you have to buy a new MB again... Sturmgewehr
I've had AMD processors for the last 4 computers. Everyone I know runs AMD processors. They've never had anything but absolute praise for them. AMD processors can easily outperform Pentium systems, plus they are significantly cheaper. I would definitely recommend AMD. CaptainRAVE
My last computer was a Pentium, and my new one is an Athlon. And believe me, an Athlon is much better
WD_ToRMeNt
Hehe I agree. I just got done (as in yesterday) building my new system based on an AMD Athon XP 1700. I must say it kicks serious butt. AMD cost less and is better technology. It might not have the Mhz that Intel has, but AMD is way more efficient and does more per clock cycle. P4 has a very inefficient 20 stage pipeline. What the P4 really has going for it is huge bandwith, which no software seems able to really use anyways. If you go with DDR over Rombus RAM you will loose a bit of that advantage also. Basicaly, if you want hype go with intel. If you want awsome tech go with AMD. WD_ToRMeNt
Oh yeah, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have to add Rombus RAM in pairs (or at least have something in the other slot to close the circuit)? That means you may end up buying two sticks of RAM just to get it working.
JPMaximilian
AMD is the future, I have two computers with AMD processors and they both kick pentiums, ahem, well you know. AMD's are better and cheaper, forget about about the P4.
