The First Real Lightsabre

The first real lightsabre is actually mentioned in the beginning of the Bible in the book of Genesis. When God drives Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, He posts two Cherubim "Angels" at the gate with "Flaming Swords". Genesis 3:24 "After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life." Who can say today whether that is a lightsabre or not? Seriously.....what would you call a "Flaming Sword"? :D

Perhaps it is just a sword on fire but then again the author of the books of the Bible wrote down as they saw events. Now if someone had never seen a lightsabre before and had no prior reference to one, they probably would not know what to call it. What do you think a person would call an airplane if they had seen something like that hundreds of years ago? A flying beast maybe? Hmmmmmm...:)

If those primatives had seen a lighter it would have been "A great angel, who issued forth flame from his hand". That is why you really can't believe what you read in the bible as far as factual information goes, because they had such a limited understanding of things back then.

Well I wouldn't say that we have such a vast understanding of things nowadays iether :p - maybe we 'think' that we do, but certainly not by a long shot.

Cheers ;)

It was a "flaming sword". Thus, a sword on fire. "limited understanding of things"? What makes you say that?! It's not like there was anybody there with high technology. It hadn't been invented yet! Metallurgy was invented while Genesis was being written (it wasn't written all at once mind you) so whoever wrote it down heard its description from Adam and Eve as a flaming sword (the sword being a recent invention, but there)

I'm a little foggy on this btw, so I don't remember who wrote that part even. It's in there (the authors signed their own little sections basically) but I don't remember. =/

Well it probably was just a flaming sword but it would be cool if it were something like that in the Star Wars universe. They didn't have the technology as we do now no, but take a look at the pyramids! That is a pretty amazing feat even today but it's mind-blowing for thousands of years ago! I believe the Bible is completely true but I'm not really here to discuss Christianity, that's not to say I don't want to but I don't think people want to talk about that in and of itself. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

I believe in the novelization of A New Hope, it's spelled "lightsabre". It is also spelled that way in the title of Episode 10 of the Empire Strikes Back radio dramatization: "The Clash of Lightsabres". Therefore, by most canonization priorities (movies first, adaptations of movies next, then EU stuff), "lightsabre" is just as valid a spelling, if not MORE valid, as "lightsaber"

Sounds good to me. I don't know why people want to get upset about this because I don't recall trying to belittle anyone so why would you want to do this to others? Anyway....These last few days are the hardest to wait for this game! I remember when JK and MOS came out...I skipped school that day...I was not feeling very well all of a sudden ya know. :D

I wasn't offended, trust me, but their are others on the LucasForums who are easily offended, especially when it comes to religion, so I was just extending a friendly warning...

Kylilin, I was not referring to you but to rather stating my purposes and sort of asking the ones who might be offended why would they be. For example I'm a Christian and I'm not offended of what Pipe Smoke said about the Bible. I'm not going to go into why I'm not offended but leave it at that. :)

Considering its following, that could be considered flamebait but suffice to say that billions disagree. ; )

Even those who disagree with the philosophical messages and themes in the Bible tend to admit its influence and power throughout history. Of course that could be interepreted to mean you think it's nonsense (ie: you don't believe in it) or that it's rubbish (ie: it's not interesting or well-written), etc.

From an objective standpoint, one can appreciate the power of myth and story (that's not to say "the bible" is all myth, it is obviously a collection of writings, but some were definately written as myth, ie: in the anthropological sense of the word) without having to accept it as literal fact. In any case, whether you believe in the bible or not is one thing. If you think it's "complete bullcrap" you're entitled to your opinion!

Even among those who accept the bible as having some power to reveal religious truth do not interpret all of it the same way.

I guess in one way you could compare it to Star Wars. For example, you could say that sure, Star Wars is unrealistic and fantastic, but you can still glean moral lessons from it. Star Wars was written "as myth" (according to George Lucas himself) for a generation who, he felt, had a dearth of mythical stories. People throughout history have loved to share stories, and these stories are a way to communicate ethics, dreams, ideals, and opinions. They are methods of teaching and passing on to others that which the storytellers value most. They are also multivalent, allowing for richness of interpretation.

(*shoves thread back on track ?*)

Personally I think the lightsaber in the bible theory was quite creative and fun, no harm there. ; )
