Zone JKII and the Player

I, for one, am happy that JKII will be included on the Zone. I always enjoyed the zone and never had a problem with it and thought it created a nice gaming community.

How do you guys feel about it?

-My apologies if there is a preexisting thread on the subject.

I have met alot of friends on the Zone throughout the years I've played there, that's not to go without saying that I haven't had my share of headaches where the Zone is concerned. I think overall it's a good place to play and meet people, but i don't know how many times I've had hackers come in and ruin perfectly good games.

I hate it when someone comes in with a hacked version of the game. It's not even fun when you play against someone hacked. Oh yeah for about one game or so. Not only does it ruin the experience for others but it also does for the ones doing it too. What sort of challenge is it if you can't die, or if you have a massive advantage? You can't relish beating someone unfairly.

I didn't like the Zone (for JK/MotS) for several reasons...

Yes, it was free, and yes, it was popular, but:

The majority of the sysops I met abused their power (banning people on a whim, while ignoring other trouble-makers, being hypocritical).

Cheaters seemed attracted to the place, and wouldn't stay in their "hax" games. This also sparked the "where can I get hax/somebody teach me to use hax" messages.

Flooders, lamers, and people trash talking about how their clan is the greatest and everybody else sucks, etc

Crappy software that was full of exploits, crashed off, was slow, and had to be updated all the time (yet hardly seemed to improve).

Limitations that newbies didn't know how to get past (like the "4 players per game" rule).

Idiots who put up passworded games by themselves and kept them up all day, making it impossible to use them.

The main problem with the Zone was the exclusivity... in the first several months of JK's life, the Zone was the sole place to play JK (no other gaming service was allowed to support it... gamespy arcade came much later.. and Kali died fairly early on). Every copy of the game had shortcuts to the zone installed and zone stickers all over the place. People went there because they didn't know any better, not because it was superior. In the early days the Zone was IE only, and as many of you remember, IE was far inferior to Netscape at the time. Later they fixed this, thankfully.

But the Zone was just so huge and bloated.. populated by all sorts of people who didn't really want to play the game, just mess around and piss each other off. The atmosphere could be okay, but there was just so much crap to get through. A lot of folks had no idea that any community beyond the Zone even existed. Mods? JK.net? Patch Commander? Kicker Helper? What's that? They'd say...

The documents on the Zone were sadly outdated.. they had an article on cheaters, and they didn't mention Kicker Helper or any of the anti-cheat patches or anything. All it said was to password the game and ask people to please stop (if you were sure they were cheating). They did nothing to try to stop the floods of ignorance that came up as a result of that issue. It was just annoying...

Anyway, I'm sure many people had good experiences on the Zone, sadly, the times I used it, I usually was disapointed, and I played most of my games in connection with Qtracker/JK.net IP boards (and scorched forums before that). Once the new game comes out, I won't have any reason to use the "gaming services" with built in server browsing and dedicated servers (and that's fine by me).

I honestly wish more people played over GameSpy Arcade. I haven't found one hacker in a GSA game, as opposed to the Zone where every other player seems to hack. Another thing I don't like about the Zone are the people who stay in the chat all day and don't even have the game installed (lots of clans do this). One last thing: the monster clans with 50+ members. I'm sorry, but when you get upwards of 20 members, you're not a clan anymore, you're an association of loosely connected players.

When JK was really popular, I didn't like The Zone at all. I'm sure it's gotten better since then, but I don't see much use for it now since JK2 is going to include an in-game server browser... That's the only thing The Zone was good for imo -- finding public JK games.

This doesn't actually have much to do with the zone, but anyways, there's a neat game matching program called "the all seeing eye" that works pretty fast, has no ads and is easy to use. It only supports popular games frome around the last two years, but I would guess they'll support JO as soon as it comes out.

For anyone interested, the website is http://www.udpsoft.com/eye .
