But with dedicated servers, people will yearn for the sense of community the zone offered, however crude the environment may be.

I'm in the zone rooms at the moment. Not much happening...

Maybe I'll try and manipulate my registry so it thinks I have JO :)

I'm sure it's quite possible for MSN staff to test the Zone without the final build of the game.. it's possible they're testing for compatability.

We could speculate that those are warez kiddies with the full game, but if it hasn't even gone gold yet (much less had a playable demo released), that's highly unlikely.

Or, alternately, they might have an early build of the game given to them specifically for online testing, and that's what they're using.

As to hacking the zone, I have no idea if the security is as bad as it was back in the day... but you never know, this is MSN we're talking here. ; )

no they just hacked into their registry and edited some stuff to let them get into a game

This could be if they are 'waiting', but not If they are 'playing' I think.

They could be Raven/LEC/Activision/MSN people, not necesarily outside beta testers

Most of the clans from the JK community have "graduated" to IRC, specifically irc.enterthegame.com . A number of online organizations associated with JK are on enterthegame (etg), such as TsN, teamwarfare, jk-mag, so on and so forth. IRC gives us the freedom to moderate ourselves, while not having to adhere to the inconsistent MSZone"Code of Conduct." It is an excellent meeting place. As we said when we founded #nar, a number of us feel that IRC will be the center for the JK2 community.

People used the Zone, because that was the only meeting place available. But now we have IRC.

Actually one way to tell if the people in there are REALLY playing JK2 is to listen to how they talk...

If they say stuff like "YO ***** WE KIK UR SORY *** YOU **** **** SUCK ******** UR CLAN DR00LZ **** 7337!!!111"

and accuse each other of cheating, then it's pretty likely they are really playing (or at least doing a great job of trying to fool you).
