GUNNER
I have also read that AMD is going to be locking the new chips.

Arimus
Yep I will be getting an AMD. Haven't decided on the speed yet. I would love to get a XP2000 but there is a huge different between 2000+ and 1900+. I also really want a Geforce 3. Am thinking of getting a Ti 500 from asus. Hopefully I will have it next week and will be able to enoy Jedi knight on it :D:D Thanks for all the votes guys!
acdcfanbill
yea the new ones are harder to crack me-thinks... read about it somewhere, it now involves soldering.... gone are the days when any old guy could trace out with a pencil and overclock to his hearts content... The new P4 northwood 1.6A is an O/Cing feind. Lots of guys have these things upo to at least2.1 and some are even at 2.4. They will run at 133FSB with default voltage which means less heat. And AMDs from what I hear need lots of extra voltage to get them to O/C which means more heat which means bad things. The 2.2 northwood are O/Cing to 2.8+ with no problem as well. A 1.6A on neweeg is $133 and a 1.8A is $183 The XP1800 (1.53mhx) is $130 and a XP 1900 is $150. So for $3 more you can have a P4 1.6A that will do easily 2.1 with nothing but a FSB bump in the menu yet your saying the AMDs are a lot cheaper? Go figure.. Read up....http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=28&threadid=708052 http://www.asusboards.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=12137&perpage=15&pagenumber=5 When your done come tell me if if maybe I read something wrong. I never said the P4 was a bad chip. I only said that when comparing MHz/GHz AMD wins and that's a fact. I said earlier that P4's were good procs. I like AMD better though. As far as the Athlon's running hot....well that's true but I'm pretty sure that if a fan stops on either an Athlon or a P4, both chips are toast and sure the Athlon will burn up a few seconds faster but they both burn up. The new P4 with the 0.13 micron process is nice along with the extra 256k cache like they used to have (512k all together L2 of course). AMD will be moving to the 0.13 micron process with their thoroughbred for sure and they will probably be adding more cache in the near future but that is pure speculation as far as the cache goes. On their ClawHammer procs they will be dealing with a SOI insulator to deal with the heat and a heat spreader similar to Intel's. I think the SOI insulator is something exclusive from AMD only but again I'm not sure on that one. Take a look at these benchmarks between the P4 2.2a and the Athlon XP 2100+. I'll start the links where it shows the test systems. You can go to the very beginning if you like but I thought I'd cut to the chase. http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1595&p=4 http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/cpu/article.php/3261_991011__3 Now, perhaps you can tell me if these benchmarks are incorrect. I think you'll find that both procs are approximately even and if you compare GHz to GHz, you'll see that the Athlon is the proc with more power considering it's clocked at 1.73 GHz as opposed to 2.2 GHz! Even if they lock the CM on them, you can still O/C the FSB.
