Darth Webster
I'm looking for a little help from the comunity in classiflying the various breeds of Gamer. I'm not talking about tactics used in game (ie, camping, run-n-gunning, rushers, etc), but the mentality behind the keyboards and mice. I have a few general types listed below. If you can think of anything that I've missed, or you've got a logical bone to pick with my definitions, please go ahead and post 'em! Imersion Junkies: These are folks who play games to escape into a different reality. Tend to naturaly gravitate towards RPGs, but will often play games with strong backstories and on-line comunities. Enjoy playing as a character with in the games fiction. Will often create detailed backstory for themselves. Posts tend to be in the words of the charater raher the the player (and often contain smatterings of old english). Quake Heads: This is likely to irk some folk out there, but this is a term I've used since the early days of gaming to describe those Run N Gun, find the rocket launcher and blow the hell outta everyone, blood n guts junkies. Not interested in team play. Always skip cut scenes. Normaly only play DeathMatch/FFA game modes. Involvment in comunities tends to be limited to complaining about nOObs, spamming about how they "owned" this or that, and flaming. Cyber-Jocks: These guys are all about competition. Simply put, they play to win. That said they usually for-go "cheep" moves, cheats, and anything else that un-balances game play (since these things take away from the feeling of acomplishment that they get from winning). Enjoy a good fight and are often good loosers as long as they don't feel cheated. Most likely to "Yoda" new players, ie teach them how to play better so they can give a better chalange. Geeky-anti-social-Scum: Can't think of a better classification for the TKs (team killers), cheaters, spammers, and all the other garbage that foul up multi-player games for the rest of us. These are the dweebs that generaly can't deal with real life and harbor resentment for everyone who can. Thus they take petty revenge from behind the safty of their computers. Phr00t
How about the Honourable Pro Gamers: Those who strive to win, but won't use cheap tactics to do so. They enjoy a good fight like anyone else and respect their enemy and his devices. Always a pleasure to talk to. *bows*
Darth Webster
Kinda what I was getting at with the Cyber-jock phr00t... I've found that those folks tend to be more laid back in attitude and yet more intense in play. Maybe a Subclass is in order thou since as you say, honor tends to vary drasticly. Darth Webster
how about those of us who are offended by this type of stereotyping..? That's a good question... Over sensitive, offence seekers? It often amazes me how people actually look for ways to be offended! I think that this is a whole different chapter in the phycology of gamers thou... TyrX
Yes for those of us who are offended by this type of stereotyping have a chip on our shoulders and need to "Relax" haha I'm probably in lines with a "cyber-jock"...
Elegy
LOL. Well done, I'd say that covers most of the gamers out there. For me it's just two types though, call me simple minded . *Real* players, and the dumbasses. Real players don't bitch the cheap moves, follow the sabers down if thats a rule on the server, and generally conduct themselves in a mature manner to make it an enjoyable game for everyone. Dumbasses are just that -- dumbasses. You might see most of them running backwards the whole game because that's how they play; ass-backwards. Backstab, heavywhoring, DFA, and repeated useage of gripping off of ledges are what brand this kind of gamer. Generally the way I deal with these ones is by killing myself. I have a key binded to this function because I will *not* allow some ass to come up behind me while I'm saberless and tear the **** out of me, or constantly bitch a move. True, I lose points for this, but it irks them because their only goal is to rack up as much points as possible and they can't get points off of me when they play like that. C'jais
Originally posted by Cobalt60 how about those of us who are offended by this type of stereotyping..? I guess you're offended by free speech as well son... But the cyber-jocks you're mentioning sometimes also can be extremely cheap in their moves and desire only to win at any level. Competition forces them to employ these moves, or so i've heard from people from these boards...
Cobalt60
people who need to break the world up into compartments (or categories) so that they can better understand their surroundings, deserve your pity. I say give it to them. stereotyping , in all its forms, is a symptom of a deeper mindset. a symptom of a certiain 'way of thinking' , which is not easily changed. be wary, my young padawan ; this path leads to the dark side
Duddle
players like me: -play to relax from school / work -play if they have nothing else to do / bad weather -have a real life too -play everything from rpg to shooters (seldomly strategy - too much thinking) --- i think that describes many players
fgStratus
I wonder how Darth Webster would classify himself, as he no doubt plays computer games too. Perhaps a "Conceited Wannabe-Intellect People-Hating Intercity Pop-culture Addicted Maggot" or something equally inane. I wonder, what psychological factors caused you to choose the name "Dark Webster"? Possibly a Freudian surfacing of the unconscious, since you apparently love to spite the English dictionary with your horrendous spelling and grammar. "Emersion" is spelled "Immersion", "naturaly" has two "l"s, "you've got is redundant (you have got), "with in" is one word, "involvment" is spelled "involvement", and the list goes on. You are attempting to understand the psychology of something that you have not even defined. So here are some constructive questions to help your misguided mind reason a little less poorly: -What is the distinction between a gamer and anyone else? Do people who play console games count as gamers? Do people who play Chess or Poker gamers? Or is it restricted to computer gaming only? And furthermore, to what extent must one play computer games in order to be classified as a gamer? -What emotional/social/cognitive/spiritual factors compel people to play games? If you, for once, actually venture out beyond the thoughts of your intercity pop-cultural values for the answers to these questions, then you might realize that the "gamer" constituency is so varied that asking your question is tantamount to asking "What is the psychology of 'eaters' (people who eat)?" And if the reason behind you posting this thread was to get information for your essay (which I doubt), then I recommend that you change topics. Darth Webster
fgStratus To answer; I'd call my self an Imersion junkie with some of the cyber-jock thrown in. The name Darth Webster would refer to My place of work. I run Websters Internet Cafe for about 46 hours a week. As far as "intercity pop-cultural values" (a phrase you really like... musta just learned it, eh?), um try "Small-town-post-goth-neo-cyber-hippie". The motive for posting this thread was rather simple. To bring up a topic for people to talk about that's a little more interesting than the pros and cons of the 1.3 patch while still being something that folks here could relate to. What I'm wondering is "what the hell is your problem?" You post nothing but flames and use big word to make yourself sound improtant while actualy saying nothing at all. You only dump on other people with out cause and add nothing to the disscution. Hmm... I'm guessing that the comment "Conceited Wannabe-Intellect People-Hating Intercity Pop-culture Addicted Maggot" was infact a textbook example of projection (look it up). Of yeah, 'n about the spelling; I didn't know this was for marks proffesser Sphincter-clamp.

mima kake
Yeaah after all it's just a game (and a damn good one too) And i agree that there are a certain type of gamers among us. I'ts all about fun to me.
fgStratus
What I'm wondering is "what the hell is your problem?" You post nothing but flames and use big word to make yourself sound improtant while actualy saying nothing at all. Sounds more like you're indignant at having been knocked off the pedestal that you placed yourself on when you attempted to play the role of the aloof intellect that is contemptously examining the "gaming community." As for my message using big words while saying nothing... if you got nothing out of my message then you either didn't read it (as opposed to just skimming over the words), or didn't understand those "big words" and thus was unable to understand the meaning of my message. If you had read my message with a focused mind you may have realizd that I was helping you, which is what you asked for. I'm looking for a little help from the comunity in classiflying the various breeds of Gamer However, you were sharp enough to notice some of the negative connotations of my message, which I inserted to mimic the negative connotations that you used in your message when you categorized everyone. I find it humorous that you found my message offensive and took the time to complain (I don't think your reply qualifies as a response) when earlier you had flamed Cobalt60 who said that your post was offensive (probably due to its glaring stupidity.) Anyway, I'll try my best to again offer you help. However, this time I'll try to do it in a less thought-provoking way so that you may actually make the effort to not embarass yourself by talking. Step 1: Stop constraining yourself based on your prejudices and assumptions (you can't understand other people without thinking outside the constraints of your own mind.) Step 2: Completely define what a "gamer" is. Step 3: Find their various motives for playing games. Step 4: Look at their various playing styles. Step 5: Analyze how their playing styles and motives are reflective of the current situation in real life, and reflective of the game that they are currently playing and reflective of the gaming community that they play with. Thus, although a gamer may not truly be an "Immersion junky" (I'll stick with your ill-labeled term for the sake of argument), he may be forced to roleplay in an MMORPG due to the nature of the game. Thus, would it be accurate to label him as an "Immersion Junky" or as a normal game player who plays within the system in order to have more fun? Hope this helps. Darth Webster
Your such a geek! I hope you're happy knowing that I've been showing your posts to everyone I know so we can laugh at you together! This was a tonge in cheek thread relfecting the idea that there a definate differences between the "types" of gamers out there. As far as contempt goes, you're projecting again. Did you look it up, BWT? I'm amused by the way you neatly avoided entire subject of your obviously failed attempts to besmirch me. Your insults are petty and just so that your the proud owner of an over-eduacted, but all together juvenal mind. Actually I did get a laugh at your point about "Webster" and my spelling... heehee, like I really give a @#$%!! I'm bord... I surf some forums, I make some post, and I just love guys like you that think this stuff has some thing to do with real life! I'm going to have to come up with a new catagory here for you... Ummm... no wait, there's one already!! NERD!! Pleas, please, please keep posting!! I love a good laugh in the morning!!!

Wow, what a sight to see. A group of retards laughing at something they don't understand because they're too stupid to understand it. I'm not quite sure how you arrived at the conclusion that I'm a geek, since you have never met me and obviously are too biased to form an objective opinion about someone that you don't know. This was a tonge in cheek thread relfecting the idea that there a definate differences between the "types" of gamers out there. ...and you decide to hilight those differences by placing all the gamers you imagined into various disparaging categories in an obvious attempt to show contempt for them and thus elevate your own self esteem. fgStratus
Your such a geek! I hope you're happy knowing that I've been showing your posts to everyone I know so we can laugh at you together! Wow, what a sight to see. A group of idiots nervously laughing at something they don't understand because they're too stupid to understand it. As far as contempt goes, you're projecting again. Did you look it up, BWT? Yes, I am projecting. I am projecting the image of the ignorant, bigoted loser who gains self-esteem by stereotyping people with different interests as bigger losers in an attempt to feel some superiority. Judging by the style of your responses, by the frequent derogatory terms that you use, and your horrible spelling and grammar, you are fitting my projection quite nicely. I'm amused by the way you neatly avoided entire subject of your obviously failed attempts to besmirch me. Your insults are petty and just so that your the proud owner of an over-eduacted, but all together juvenal mind. My God, do you even read what you are writing? Or are you too high from your last attempt at fitting into your society that you just type out whatever insipid thought floats through your mind? According to what you just wrote, you are "[amused by the way I avoided the subject of my failed attempts to insult you.]" I wasn't aware that was a subject, since everything that I've said regarding you has been shown to be true: You can't spell, your grammar is horrible, your "defining gamer" attempt is impeded by your own bigotry (which has also been revealed in all your posts), and your idiocy is shown by your lack of logic in any of your ideas and your inability to respond to anything specific in my posts. I also love how you use the term "over-eduacted" to describe my mind. I'm placing this term right next to the "the subject of my failed attempts to insult you" statement in the "I have no clue what I'm talking about and I feel the need to stereotypically label everything in order to simplify my life" category. Actually I did get a laugh at your point about "Webster" and my spelling... heehee, like I really give a @#$%!! I'm bord... I surf some forums, I make some post, and I just love guys like you that think this stuff has some thing to do with real life! In other words: "Haha I found it funny that I can't spell, and I don't care that I can't spell because I'm bored and I surf forums all day in order to make an attempt at a social life and I love guys that think that what I say and think has anything to do with real life." I'm very sorry to tell you this, but YOU EXIST IN THE REAL WORLD AND NOT JUST ON THE FORUMS. WHAT YOU SAY HAS AN IMPACT ON OTHERS, AND IF PEOPLE ARE SURROUNDED BY IDIOTS LIKE YOU SPEWING THIS PREJUDICED TRASH THEN THEY WILL BEGIN TO BELIEVE THAT IT IS TRUE. I'm going to have to come up with a new catagory here for you... Ummm... no wait, there's one already!! NERD!! HAHA... I get it! Its funny because you called me a nerd! HAHA. Please continue in your crusade on stereotypically labeling and categorizing everyone into derogatory groups in order to show that you are unable to grasp the concept that all people are different and each have beliefs and values that are different from yours. Datheus
...Well...I had something good to say, but then it just got stupid... so all I'm gonna say is this: Yea, maybe you had something to help the subject, but you presented in such a manner that I'm sure there were a good few people who just wanted to smack you. And this isn't derogatory, it never was. He gave us choices to describe ourselves, and we pick one. And isn't saying all bigots are stupid, misguided, or evil, also bigotry? It's separating one group of people with a common mind set and labeling them with YOUR generlization that they are evil and you are good...hmm... Darth Webster
Too, ture Darthus... I've perty much given up on getting any real feed back outta this thread, but DAMN, it's just so funny watching this fg guy go off! Stratus, methinks, is just not a very happy guy. No wounder though, when you've got your head so far up your own ass all you can see it $h!t. As for you strat; Yes, I am projecting. I am projecting the image of the ignorant, bigoted loser who gains self-esteem by stereotyping people with different interests as bigger losers in an attempt to feel some superiority. This is FUNNY AS HELL!!! "Projecting" is a classical term for applying ones own fault to others in order to avoid feeling responsible for them! Jeez... for someone who likes to go off about how no one has the mental capcity to understand anything, ya sure friged that one up good, eh? I really don't know if I should feel sorry for you or not, my poor mis-guided dork. Read everything you have posted, apply it to yourself, BELIEVE IT, go have yourself a good cry, then call it "therapy". Oh yeah, please keep it comming!! I love watching you make a public ass of yourself!
Robbiesan
no worries Webster.. you asked a simple question which required a simple answer.. those who take the time out to over analyse the thread and yourself to the extent they have (no naming required) are the one with the major issues to sort through.. I'll choose Cyber-jock myself as the closest one.. I like FPS mostly, and space fighter sims, not RPG or strat too much.. I play to have fun and I do like to win, but losing is part of gaming.. Vestril
I guess I'm a cross between immersion and jock. I don't like roleplaying, but I play to have fun more than anything. I like winning, but I don't like doing boring things to win. I just enjoy fun games really... I was going to take offense at being categorized, but...really that's been done to an extreme. It's not that bad anyway...sheesh.
Darth Webster
heehee... yeah, funny how some folk seem seem to go outta their way to be offended. If I posted "the sky is blue" I'm sure someone out there would get all red faced and try to argue it to death! (maybe I should try it... see what happens). Anyway, since actual logical people are posting, I can resume with the original intention. I didn't mean to offend anyone out there with this thread. Ok, maybe a bit with the quake head comment;) . Is there anyone out there that would consitter them selves to be Teamsters, I wounder? Ie, focus on team play and are happy when their side wins, regardless of their personal score. If anyone feels that they can add a catagory (or gross-over-generalized-evil-sterotype, depending on who you listen to) please go ahead. Just remeber folks, this is for amusement! Lime-Light
I dont fit any any of the aformentioned catagoies so I'll make one up: I just want to be entertained. I'll play any game as long as its fun, and I can take it seriousy enough to invest time in it. I'm not especially good at any particular game, but I suck at none.
