BCanr2d2
Finally a major world sporting event in a decent time slot for us poor Aussies. Don't have to stay up to all hours of the morning to catch the World Cup live. Hopefully Sepp Blatter will be true to his word and give the final confederation WITHOUT direct access to the World Cup Finals that deserved spot. Go Socceroo's World Cup 2006!! Nill the Mean
Football brings out the worst in people. It causes more riots than anything else I can think of. If it has that effect on people it should be banned.

Darth Simpson
Wow, Germany demolished Saudi-Arabia today, 8-0. Holy crap, that was an awesome game. Well, not if you were cheering for SA of course, but still... Denmark won 2-1 over Uruguay as well. Too bad Norway didn't make it this time, but we have a crappy coach. The players have potential though.
Guest Krayt Tion
While I'm not the biggest sports afficando I will always tune in for some World Cup action every four years. Reasons why I love to watch: -Some of the best athletes in the world elect to play football, often the premiere sport of their countries. Stunning displays of athleticism! -Some of the star players that gather for this event are practically revered as Gods in their respective countries. This further sets the stage for epic clashes of titans, surely larger-than-life heroes putting it all on the line. -While I have many reservations about nationalism I don't mind its playful manifestations in the World Cup. Drama unfolds and passion errupts on a truely worldly scale unlike any other single activity in the world that I can think of. Even the Olympics, which feature multiple sports, cannot pack the kind of heat the World Cup does. I also the love the bond created by it (albiet a temporary one) with much of the world. I saw my first WC in '94 in a country thousands of miles away from my own, of all places. I was surrounded by a group of devouted fans and wonderful people who were also from other different parts of the globe. This was how I came to appreciate it. There was also a World Cup soccer game for the original GameBoy my friend brought with him and we played that while the whole thing was going on. I remember how well the various strenghths and weakness of the teams matched up with the real thing. Good good times. I'm not that hung up over a particular team or another, but I do know who I prefer to win in the groups and some individual match ups. Good luck teams. Diversion
"...putting it all on the line." Well Krayt opinions differ and that is as it should be, but imho putting it all on the line is a more appropriate expression in sports like car/motorcycle racing or surfing/skydiving etc etc. Personally I dislike soccer because it's boring and as someone said it brings the worst out of people. Granted riots and other bad things can occur in other sports as well but not at the same magnitude and not as regularly either. I happened to be on vacation in Spain when the champions league final was played a few years ago. Barcelona was full of British fans and never in my life have I seen people behave as badly as they did. Screaming at people, trying to start fistfights and breaking things. Absolutely no respect for the locals or the fact that they were guests in their country. I'm sure there is a lot of nice British fans to, but that occasion certainly did nothing to improve the image of soccer fans in general and British fans in particular. But to each his own I guess. Whipp05
consider the hooligan element a tiny minority.. which seems prevalent due to the fact so many love football its a national instituion in countires outside the US where you play .. the world series vs yourselves etc.. for outside US the world cup is a matter of national pride and very important to sportsfans.. btw the world cup final is the most watched TV event ever .. not just for sport.. the opening game had ad estimated 550 million viewers .. consider the population of the USA is 260 ice hockey not violent ? lol football in itself isnt violent (unless youre roy keane) but people take it too serious not surprising since its on TV 24/7 in countires atm some say computer games can cause violence but i dont see you wanting those banned

The expression still works for me, though, because their careers and their countries' pride are at stake. Consider that the WC only happens every four years and star players usually only have maybe 2 appearances while they are in still in their prime (with the exception of goalies). That seems to me like an extraordinary amount of pressure to perform; they've got a lot ridding on their performance and they've got to put out or go home in a serious mess of shame. Personally I dislike soccer because it's boring and as someone said it brings the worst out of people. Granted riots and other bad things can occur in other sports as well but not at the same magnitude and not as regularly either. The sport itself is not particularly violent, certainly much less violent than a great number of sports. The dynamics and workings of football do not lend themselves to violence. It's barely even a contact sport compared to the bone crunching of others. I'm of the opinion that it is most unfair to blame the game itself. If a different game was created and eventually adopted as nationalistic vehicle in place of football, you would surely be condemning that instead. Anyways, I've got England/Sweden on in a couple hours. I know the game has already aired, but coverage in the US is absolutely terrible, in part because of the locations of the cup (early AM showings for us) but more because major channels aren't carrying enough of it. I agree with that and just to avoid misunderstandings, I wasn't blaming violence on the game itself. The fault(as in other sports) lies with the group of spectators who doesn't seem to care much for the sport itself. They prefer to get drunk(nothing wrong with a couple of beers) and start fights with the other teams suportes. That said I still find soccer boring:D But to each his own as I stated earlier. Would be a rather boring world if everyone had the same interests.

Murdoch
Ok on any other day i would be overjoyed that Sweden managed a draw with England. But today we should've won darnit. We even managed to build up considerable pressure in the 2nd half. And what do they do? They decide to play on defence! I HATE IT WHEN THEY SETTLE FOR A DRAW! I'd rather see england smash us than having the chance to win and playing it safe. Sad.
SharaFett
i'm from Long island, NY, USA, and i think SOCCER RULES MUTHAFUKAS!!! 1. hockey is for canadians because they have nothing better to do. if you're an american and you like hockey, then consider yourself a canadian (and we all know NOBODY wants to be a canadian) 2. BATISTUTA RULES ALL!!! WHO HERE SAW THE ARGENTINA/NIGERIA GAME?! OMG HOW THE HELL DID HE DO THAT?! I LUV HIM! 3. america always has and always is going to suck at futbol. 4. whichever american says that soccer sucks because the scoring doesnt go past 10 points just further proves their stereotype of being lazy fat-azzes...they may bash baseball, but let's keep out composure, guys. (btw- BIIIIG mets AND yanks fan)

(btw- BIIIIG mets AND yanks fan) How true, they only see the passing game, but they miss the exciment of moving the ball down field then all of a sudden a breakaway surfaces, and a great shot is made on goal. Soccer is a game of reading, and its unpredictable which makes it all the better. Look at NFL games you know what they will do they have sorted plays, not that much fun (dont get me wrong i do like football, this past nfl season was a good one) futball is to high brow for the majority of americans
Redstorm
I think that the Americans are just annoyed because: A. There are teams from different countries in a world championship. B. They believe that a good match is a high scoring one, some of the best games I've seen have been 1-1 draws. C. They do not have a snowflakes chance in hell. Most of the skill in soccer does not relate to scoring its getting the ball in a position to score. I heard that when America hosted the World Cup the wanted to make the goals larger by a foot either side so there would be more goals and from their point of view more excitement. For all you Aussies out there doesn't channel 9s coverage suck, SBS is doing a great job. Also I think that there will be problems if Australia make the World Cup as 200 Aussies drinking beer and singing is a quiet afternoon with the boys not holiganism As for predictions I think that Argentina look like they might go all the way. BCanr2d2
Only downfall in professional soccer is the diving and fake fouls teams try to get. I remember World Cup 98 in France as the Diving Championships, was very bad for them, saw the slo-mo's where usually the attacker tripped himself up, or just fell, and up came a free for them, or even worse a yellow or red card for the defender, when they never touched them..... SBS will always do a better job, Ch 9 only wants to cash in on the new viewers they have got from getting the AFL..... Just hope Sepp Blatter keeps his word and give Oceania direct qualification for the next world cup. After all, after this World Cup, the holders will have to qualify like the rest, give us that spot.... Although that may mean Australia can qualify by not even having to play their first string players at all. It may also mean getting some serious competition more often, as the other countries will have to deal with us every world cup......
Whipp05
give australia an automatic spot each world cup? how insane is that idea they are however going to reduce europes and south americas share of spaces per world cup .. therefore teams from all regions will have more of a chance than ever to qualify .. good luck china and senegal!
