Mara Jade was only "apprenticed" to Sidious, as a member of The Hand, the Emperor's elite group of force-sensitive assasins who could hear the emperor's thoughts from across the galaxy.

After Luke supposedly killed the emperor, Mara Jade hated Luke. She was sent to assassinate him before the Emperor's death, but had failed to get to him in Jabba's palace. Mara hunted Luke down for killing the Emperor, but then both were put into a situation that they had to work together to get out of alive, and afterward, they grew an affection for each other. Mara Jade eventually became Mara Jade Skywalker, and they even had a kid together.

And as a side note, because she did not like the structured ways of hubby Luke's new Jedi academy, she trained in the ways of the Jedi for awhile instead under the guidance of Kyle Katarn (Mysteries of the Sith).

The way I have been told about how a Jedi gains his ranks is as follows:

Padawan Learner: Obviously under the instruction of a Jedi Knight or Master, before he/she takes their final trial(s).

Jedi Knight: A Padawan that has passed their final trial, and is considered to have mastery in the Force. Only then can they take on their own Padawan and teach them in the ways of the Force

Jedi Master: A title bestowed upon those Jedi Knights who successfully train a Padawan to become a Jedi Knight. That they have mastery in the Force, and have sucessfully passed that knowledge onto another.

Qui-Gon had already trained another 2 I believe before Obi-Wan came along. One did become a Jedi Knight, the other failed miserably at the whole thing....

I assume where I read this on other Forums, it was probably from EU, so take that into account too..........

Qui Gon was a Jedi Master, one step below council.

That is going by the movies, EU can get real fuzzy.

Obi Wan said to Qui Gon that if he just listened to the council and didn't act on his own impulses, he would be on the council.

Qui Gon Jinn was an awesome Jedi Master who was simply outdone by a better swordsman.

WHOAH!!... Where the hell did the "back on topic" come from?? :D

Yeah, that's what I thought, Twins of Doom, but people have told me they have proof to the contrary that Qui-Gon was indeed a Master. Are you sure you read that on starwars.com?

Obi-Wan, indeed, wasn't a Master, except for in the honorary sense, but only a Knight.
