Republic... too powerful?

Recommended Posts

Well... they do have a popular set of strengths, which is why I think they are so popular. Most people like having good air (especially with air being better in CC), jedi, troops, plus their mechs are okay. The starfighter can raid an enemy's economy in T3 (it can outrun fighters) and even better in T4 if they don't expect a stealth attack. If you are careful you can put some over the enemy's town and know exactly what they are doing. Air cruiser boost has prevented me from losing many 600 nova units, so it is also very useful. And if you are losing starfighters can take out defended aircrusiers with incredible ease, preventing your opponent from massing them and blowing up your base.

Jedi... they can be very useful as they will take out attacking cannons and then recloak, during a battle they can sneak around and attack all of the opponent's important heavy weapons, mechs, with impunity and dissapear before they lose even a quarter of their health. They can go right under a fortress unseen, and toast enemy AA mobiles, cannons, etc: whatever may have been preventing you from destroying that fortress. And of course they do a good job of raiding your opponent's economy, although they don't have an especially good attack vs workers, they are reasonably fast and invisible.

Troops... well no matter what Sithmaster may rant about the republic and their crap troops, the republic's troops are very good. With all techs researched they will come out almost as soon as you click to make one, and they get all the standard upgrades. And the improved medics are nice to have.

Mechs... they have heavy strikes to support their troops against other civs' "quality" troops and they have heavy mech destroyers to prevent enemy strikes from toasting their own troops. While they don't have the heavy assault, assaults are so expensive that I rarely bother with them. A few masters, or grenadiers, or mech destroyers will take them down easily.

I don't think they are overpowered, but I do think they have a very popular set of bonuses that fits with many peoples' playing styles. When I heard what strengths the republic was going to have I realized immediately that they would be my favorite civ - they were somewhat like the rebels (which I didn't like because the lack of Hvy Weapons engineers made it difficult to attack bases defended by cannon). Republic had a lot of the Rebels' strengths but they also had some other things rebels lacked that made me less likely to play as them.

I think the Republic is a "solid" civ, rather than one with very pronounced strengths and weaknesses. They do nothing particularly badly, but only their Jedi are particularly strong. Their mechs are only reasonable, lacking some of the mech factory upgrades, but much better than Naboo mechs, for example. Their troopers are solid: fully upgradeable but lacking the extra punch of Confederacy or Wookie troopers. Their air is strong, but lacks the advantages posessed by that of the Naboo or the Rebellion (must qualify that this is IMO, since I do not wish to get drawn into another discussion on the relative merits of the Jedi Starfighter). Their Heavy Weapons are just about serviceable but suffer from a lack of most upgrades. They're a slightly vanilla civ, barring their Jedi, which ownz, or whatever you kids are saying nowadays :)

Definitely not overpowered, but I do like them, and I think they "feel" right, based on what we see of the Republic military in Ep II.
