Do you think America is a Democrasy?

This isn't say that our goverment is bad or anything.

I think this is one of the most misunderstood thing.

Here is a dictionary entry on the word democrasy

A form of goverment in where the all people of a country, city, or state meets for voting on law.

And here is the def. for a Republic

A form of goverment in which governed send represenatives to speak for the group of an country or state.

Also I dug up some history.

The Romans before the Roman empire had a Repulic form of goverment. This is the closest goverment in history to ours when our goverment was first founded(which not alot has changed, but some has).

I say that may call America a democrasy not on purpose, they just never did the digging.

Then I guess I am confused by the question you are asking.

Of course I think America is a Democracy.

To be more exact America is a Democratic Republic.

The founding fathers did not use that term because it is the result of more contemporary political philosophy.

I would assume people don't say 'Democratic Republic' when they refer to America because 'Democracy' is a good deal less of a mouthful.

I hope I've managed to answer your question here.

We are a democratic republic in that we democratically elect people who will make decisions for us.

For example, when we vote for a president, we are actually voting for electoral voters to cast their vote in accordance to their particular state's choice. If Florida had a majority of its voters vote Republican, our electoral voters would be expected to cast their votes all republican. It doesn't always work that way, but it's designed to work that way. I could be wrong, but that's my understanding of it.

Well, American government doesn't merely rely on one party or the other.... there can be other parties... we don't HAVE to vote for one party or the other. That is a ridiculous statement (no offense meant by that).

If there is a true failing with the government here in America, I see it lying with the apathy and lethargy of the citizen masses. The citizens of America have the ability to come together and speak up for what they hold to be true. If enough people get together and work the official channels of our established government things can be changed without relying solely on elected officials. This rarely happens though.

My qustion was "What kind of Goverment do you think we are?"

I was asking what you think.

Oh and by the way in a true democrasy there is no elections every one that lives in the country is a goverment offical(Except Crimials and Children)

And a note for Americans if you want to keep America a Democratic Repuplic don't give up your rights. The romans did that and that is how the Roman Empire was born. Which Empires fall faster.

We use an electoral college system because it would require more votes to change than the pro-popular people can get. I don't remember for sure, but it would probably require a constitutional amendment to get, and those are nearly impossible to get. Heck, you probably couldn't get a super-majority of the people to say it's Friday. :)

In addition, the electoral college was designed to prevent the people from voting in someone totally not qualified for the position or in a deadlock (*cough*Florida*cough*)
